‘Alien: Earth’ Sets Franchise Record, Surpassing Even the Original Movies
Alien: Earth has quickly become the highest-rated entry in the Alien franchise, according to Rotten Tomatoes. The new live-action series, which premiered on FX, FX on Hulu, and Disney+ worldwide on August 12, 2025, has earned a 96% critics’ score. This puts it above both James Cameron’s Aliens and the original 1979 Alien, which each have a 94% rating.

The Alien franchise has seen highs and lows over the years. Older entries like Alien 3 only scored 44%, and Alien: Resurrection received 55%. Prometheus landed at 73%, Alien: Covenant reached 65%, and Alien: Romulus hit 80%.
The crossover films struggled even more, with Alien vs. Predator at 21% and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem scoring just 12%. Considering these numbers, the early success of Alien: Earth is a big win for the series.
Rotten Tomatoes praised the show, writing, “Stylistically bold and scary as hell, Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth transplants the Xenomorph mythos into the television medium with its cinematic grandeur intact while staking out a unique identity of its own.” Metacritic also confirmed the positive reception, giving the series a weighted average score of 84 out of 100 based on 118 critics, which is marked as “universal acclaim.”

Created by Noah Hawley, Alien: Earth is a prequel set in 2120, two years before the events of the original Alien movie.
The story follows the space vessel Maginot, which crash-lands on Earth. A young woman and a small group of tactical soldiers discover a terrifying threat that could change the planet forever. The series stars Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, Adarsh Gourav, and Timothy Olyphant.
Fans and critics are thrilled with the series. Many are praising the mix of suspense, horror, and cinematic quality, saying it captures the Xenomorphs and tense atmosphere that made the original films iconic. Some reactions are so enthusiastic that sources like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic jokingly report the excitement is “so loud it could be heard in space.”
Alien: Earth is proving that the franchise can succeed in a new format. By honoring the legacy of the original films while offering fresh storytelling and cinematic style, the series has quickly become a standout entry. With its high ratings and positive reviews, fans are excited to continue following the fight against one of sci-fi horror’s most legendary creatures.
