Netflix’s Record-Breaking Hottest Movie Teases Sequel Plot
“KPop Demon Hunters” has taken Netflix by storm, becoming the biggest movie on the platform right now. The animated musical, set in Seoul and told in English, follows three K-pop stars who use the power of their songs to fight off demons.
It has been a cultural sensation, with millions of streams and chart-topping songs that appeal to both kids and adults.
One of the film’s directors, Maggie Kang, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the challenges of the first movie and how a sequel could explore more of the characters’ pasts.
She said, “We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that’s brand new to people. What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?…[If a sequel happens,] then we can reveal more of that backstory.”
Kang explained that the first movie couldn’t cover everything, so choices had to be made about what was essential. “There was really not a space for the movie to show all that. So we really had to make these choices of what is essential to the story, and that is the information that we will show.”
“I think that was one of the hardest things we kept getting asked: ‘Please show us this.’ ‘I think the audience is going to want to know this or that. We just made decisions to be like, ‘Nope, that is not essential to this story for this movie, and maybe that can be shown some other time,’” she added.
According to recent reports, Netflix is planning to expand “KPop Demon Hunters” into a larger franchise. The film’s success has sparked interest in sequels, a live-action remake, and even other projects within the same universe.
During a recent Netflix earnings call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos commented on the film’s success. “‘KPop Demon Hunters’ is a phenomenal success out of the gate … And the fact that people are in love with this film and in love with the music from this film, that will keep it going for a long time. So we’re really thrilled. And now the next beat is, where does it go from here?”
Sources familiar with Netflix’s plans told TheWrap that the company is exploring multiple ways to expand the story. Ideas include a stage musical, a live-action series, and two sequels to complete a trilogy.
They are also considering a short film to connect the main movies, similar to how Disney created “Frozen Fever” to bridge the first and second “Frozen” films.
Kang’s comments suggest that a sequel could delve deeper into the characters’ backstories, revealing how each of the girls became demon hunters and exploring more of their personal journeys. With Netflix seeing this as its own potential franchise on the scale of “Frozen,” fans are eagerly waiting to see what comes next.
