New York Knicks fans had plenty to celebrate after the team’s historic championship win this past weekend. It was their first NBA title in over 50 years, and the moment quickly turned into a wider pop culture event as celebrities reacted across social media and in arenas.

One of the most talked-about reactions came from actor Timothée Chalamet, whose excitement went viral almost immediately. Chalamet, a well-known and long-time Knicks supporter, posted during the celebration: “Way rather this than the Oscars!” The comment spread quickly online and sparked debate about what he meant, especially given his recent Oscar campaign loss earlier in the year.

Chalamet had been in the running for Best Actor but did not win, and parts of his awards-season comments had drawn criticism at the time. Some viewers felt he came across as overly confident, while others took issue with remarks he made about ballet and opera communities. Because of that context, his Knicks celebration post was interpreted in different ways. Some saw it as playful sports excitement, while others read it as a subtle reference to his disappointment during awards season.

However, fans of Chalamet pointed out that his connection to the Knicks is not new. According to archived social media posts and fan resurfaced content, Chalamet has been a dedicated supporter of the team since long before he became a global film star.

One of the most widely shared throwback moments came from 2010, when a teenage Chalamet won a Knicks fan contest on Twitter. At the time, Knicks rookies Landry Fields and Andy Rautins were running a scavenger hunt for fans in New York City. They posted clues on social media and offered game tickets to whoever found them first and answered trivia correctly.

The contest ended when a young Chalamet tracked them down at Grand Central Terminal. Fields later shared a photo of the moment, writing: “Hahaha the contest is over!! Tim Chalamet is the winner. Found us at grand central. Congrats Tim! See you Friday at the game!”

The image resurfaced again during the recent championship run and quickly went viral among fans. Many commented on how unusual it is to have such a well-documented “origin story” for a celebrity fan. One popular reaction online joked that “acting is just a way to support his Knicks addiction,” while another fan wrote, “His digital footprint is so insane.”

Others added more playful takes, suggesting that his connection to the team has always been central to his identity. One comment read, “Say what you want but the man’s a day 1.”

In a past podcast appearance, Chalamet himself addressed his long-standing relationship with the team. He said: “I don’t cherish anything more in my new life than my Garden access,” referring to Madison Square Garden, which is close to where he grew up in New York City.

Taken together, both his recent viral reaction and the resurfaced childhood moment reinforce the same idea: for Chalamet, being a Knicks fan has been a constant part of his life, long before fame and awards-season attention.
