A Glitching Ultron Painting at D23 Just Teased a Major ‘VisionQuest’ Twist
Marvel’s D23 presence this weekend has turned into a scavenger hunt for fans desperate to piece together every detail about ‘VisionQuest’ before its October premiere. Between costume reveals, merchandise leaks, and now interactive booth displays, the studio has been feeding out just enough information to keep speculation running wild without confirming anything outright.
That strategy hit a new high point this weekend with one of the show floor’s more inventive touches. Rather than a static poster or prop case, Marvel built an actual interactive display designed to catch fans off guard the same way the show itself is expected to.
James Spader’s Ultron glitches through a portrait frame inside the ‘VisionQuest‘ booth at D23, revealing his character’s human form mid transition, with half the image showing his classic robotic design from 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and the other half showing his face rendered as flesh and blood.
The effect mirrors exactly what fans have been speculating about since Ultron’s return to the franchise was first confirmed. Showrunner Terry Matalas has previously described Ultron’s comeback as happening in an “amazing, unique way,” appearing across the series in both robotic and human form, with the two personas designed to feel genuinely distinct from one another rather than simply a costume swap.
That dual identity carries real thematic weight given the show’s central focus. ‘VisionQuest’ follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he works to reclaim his own humanity, and having Ultron, his creator in the comics, oscillate between machine and man throughout the series reinforces that same tension playing out on both sides of their relationship.
Bettany has spoken enthusiastically about working alongside Spader on the project, describing his co-star’s performance as delicious and genuinely funny to watch. He praised the collaboration directly, telling Bleeding Cool that the two actors loved working together, while also crediting Matalas for doing a strong job steering the overall project.
The glitching Ultron display wasn’t the only detail fans picked apart this weekend. Some observers noted that the artwork appearing to be hacked by Ultron may itself be tied to Jim Hammond, the original android Human Torch from Marvel’s earliest comics era, whose presence in the MCU has only ever been teased briefly as an Easter egg in 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’
That connection matters because of Hammond’s specific comic book history with Vision. In the source material, Ultron reportedly used schematics from the original Human Torch to help construct Vision’s body, giving any potential appearance from the character direct relevance to the show’s central mythology about android identity and creation.
Whether that particular Easter egg pays off remains unconfirmed, but it fits neatly alongside the show’s already stacked roster of MCU AI characters getting human forms for the first time. Emily Hampshire plays E.D.I.T.H., Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., and James D’Arcy returns as J.A.R.V.I.S., while T’Nia Miller makes her MCU debut as Jocasta.
‘VisionQuest’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, marking the final chapter in the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued through ‘Agatha All Along.’ With Marvel expected to release the show’s first full trailer sometime during this weekend’s D23 presentation, fans may not have to wait much longer to see exactly how Spader’s glitching Ultron actually moves and speaks on screen.
