A New Exclusive Clip from ‘One Night Only’ Is Giving Fans Their First Real Look at the Sex Purge Rom-Com

Genre mashups have become increasingly common in Hollywood, but few pairings sound as genuinely unexpected as combining the dystopian tension of a night-of-lawlessness thriller with the warm, fuzzy conventions of a traditional romantic comedy. That improbable combination is exactly what’s generating buzz for one of this week’s most talked-about theatrical releases.

The premise alone has been enough to spark plenty of online conversation since the film’s trailer first dropped earlier this year, with audiences split on whether the concept plays as clever satire or simply a gimmick stretched thin. Now, with the film’s release just days away, a new clip is giving fans another taste of what to expect.

An exclusive clip for ‘One Night Only,’ starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, has surfaced online ahead of the film’s theatrical debut this Friday. The film has been described as a rom-com version of ‘The Purge,’ set in a world where premarital sex is outlawed except for one designated night each year.

Directed by Will Gluck, known for films including ‘Easy A’ and ‘Anyone But You,’ the film follows Barbaro and Turner as two love-starved strangers who cross paths in a slightly fictionalized New York City on the one night when their world’s restrictive laws are temporarily lifted. According to IMDb, the story follows two strangers desperately searching for partners within their society’s strict social rules.

The film’s high-concept premise originated from screenwriter Travis Braun’s Black List script, which centered on two strangers trying to find someone to be with during the year’s only permitted night. Gluck later took writing duties on the final screenplay, working from Braun’s original concept to shape it into the film’s current form.

Critics have been split on the premise’s execution so far. Time Out described the film as a “major studio sex comedy” built around what it playfully called “The Horny Purge,” while other early reactions to the trailer noted skepticism about whether Gluck’s directorial style would elevate the concept beyond its novelty premise.

Turner, long rumored as a potential future James Bond, brings credits including ‘Green Room,’ ‘The Boys in the Boat,’ and the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise to the role, while Barbaro, an Oscar nominee for her work in ‘A Complete Unknown,’ leads the film opposite him as Allie. The supporting cast includes Julia Fox, Maya Hawke, Molly Ringwald, Este Haim, Ziwe, King Princess, and Ben Marshall, rounding out an ensemble that skews heavily toward buzzy, culturally plugged-in names.

The film’s central conceit has already sparked plenty of internet speculation about the finer details of its fictional world, with fans and critics alike raising questions about how exactly the law functions day to day, and what loopholes its characters might exploit within such a strange societal framework.

With ‘One Night Only’ set to open in U.S. theaters on August 7, and internationally on August 28, audiences will finally get the chance to see whether the film’s audacious premise translates into the kind of genuine romantic chemistry and charm that’s defined Gluck’s best previous work.
