A New Joker Voice Actor Has Been Revealed, and Fans Are Already Talking
Gotham’s animated underworld has been building toward this moment since the very first season quietly planted the seeds. Prime Video’s noir take on the Dark Knight mythology has spent its run so far establishing a grounded, hard-boiled version of Bruce Wayne’s early years, one where the show’s most notorious villain had barely appeared at all.
That absence became one of the more intriguing mysteries surrounding the series, with fans wondering exactly when and how the Clown Prince of Crime would finally step into the spotlight. San Diego Comic Con gave those fans their answer this week, along with a first proper look at the actor taking on the role.
Prime Video confirmed that Matthew Needham, best known for playing Larys Strong on ‘House of the Dragon,’ will voice the Joker in Season 2 of ‘Batman: Caped Crusader.’ The casting news was revealed during the show’s SDCC panel, which also featured a world premiere screening of the season’s opening episode alongside cast members Hamish Linklater and Jamie Chung.
Needham steps into a role previously handled only briefly by John DiMaggio, who voiced the villain’s single line during the Season 1 finale while also playing Detective Harvey Bullock elsewhere in the series. With Joker set to play a significantly larger part this time around, the production brought in someone entirely new to the character rather than expanding DiMaggio’s dual role.
Speaking with CBR at the convention, Needham revealed that his direction during the audition process pushed him toward something unexpected for the character. He explained he was told to make the performance European and humorless, a striking departure from the manic, cackling interpretations most audiences associate with the villain.
That approach lines up with comments from executive producer James Tucker, who indicated this version of the Joker will feel like a very different take while still remaining rooted in the character’s comic book history. Given the show’s overall commitment to a grittier, more grounded noir aesthetic, a colder and more restrained Joker fits naturally within that established tone.
Needham’s casting places him among a lineage of notable actors who have voiced the character across various animated projects, following performances from names like Mark Hamill, Troy Baker, Richard Epcar and DiMaggio himself. Stepping into that legacy carries obvious weight, especially for an actor without prior DC experience heading into the role.
Beyond the series itself, Needham will also reprise the Joker in ‘Batman, Caped Crusader, Chronicles,’ a companion game launching through Amazon Luna alongside the new season. Linklater and Michelle C. Bonilla are set to return for the game as well, extending the character’s presence across multiple formats simultaneously.
