Aaron Pierre Brings Green Lantern Energy to the Red Carpet at ‘Lanterns’ Premiere

DC Studios has spent the past several years methodically rebuilding its cinematic and television universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran, and ‘Lanterns‘ represents one of the most anticipated pieces of that puzzle yet.

Billed as a detective story inspired by shows like ‘True Detective’ and ‘Slow Horses,’ the series pairs two very different Green Lanterns investigating a dark, Earth-based mystery in the American heartland, marking a distinctly grounded approach for a franchise built around cosmic power rings.

That anticipation has only grown as the show’s premiere date approached, fueled by a steady stream of trailers, first-look photos, and viral moments from its stars. The show’s official trailer debuted at Comic-Con this year, giving fans their most complete look yet at finished visual effects and footage ahead of the series’ actual launch. With the series now just days from its debut, all eyes turned to Los Angeles this week as the cast finally walked the red carpet together.

Aaron Pierre, who stars as John Stewart, arrived at the ‘Lanterns’ premiere on Thursday, August 13, at the Paramount Theatre in Los Angeles, stepping out in striking fashion ahead of the show’s official launch. The moment quickly circulated online, with fans praising the presence Pierre brought to the carpet just days before audiences get their first full look at his performance as the newest Green Lantern recruit.

That red carpet energy has become something of a pattern for Pierre throughout the show’s promotional run. He recently went viral after flawlessly reciting the Green Lantern Oath alongside a co-host during a live CBS Mornings appearance, delivering the iconic pledge “In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight” without missing a beat, a moment that further cemented his connection to the role in the eyes of longtime fans.

The series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Earth’s original Green Lantern, alongside Pierre as John Stewart, a new recruit Jordan is tasked with training as his eventual replacement. According to the show’s official description, Stewart is considered an anomaly within the Lantern Corps’ history, since he was recruited directly by the Guardians of the Universe rather than being chosen by a power ring, as is customary for every Lantern before him.

Rounding out the cast are Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion reprising his role as Guy Gardner, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and Nicole Ari Parker, among others. Filming took place in Los Angeles between February and July of last year, with James Hawes directing the first two episodes alongside Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov handling the remainder of the season’s directing duties.

‘Lanterns’ is scheduled to premiere Sunday, August 16, on HBO and HBO Max, with the season running eight episodes through early October. New episodes are set to release weekly, giving fans a full summer-into-fall rollout for the mystery at the heart of the show, one that promises to dig into John Stewart’s military background and complicated family history along the way.

With the red carpet premiere now behind them and the series’ actual debut just days away, ‘Lanterns’ looks positioned to be one of the DCU’s most closely watched television projects yet. Between Chandler and Pierre’s central partnership and the show’s grounded, investigative approach to a genre usually built around spectacle, expectations are high heading into its opening weekend, especially given how much buzz Pierre’s promotional appearances have already generated.
