Adam Driver Finally Talks About Playing Mr. Sinister in Marvel’s New ‘X-Men’
For years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has teased its mutant era without actually delivering it. Fans have spent nearly a decade speculating about when, and how, the X-Men would finally cross over from Fox’s old franchise into Kevin Feige’s sprawling superhero ecosystem.
That wait officially ended this month. Marvel Studios used Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim to unveil the full cast of its upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot, confirming a roster that’s been the subject of casting rumors for months.
The biggest surprise of the night came from Adam Driver, who appeared in a prerecorded video message revealing he’s stepping into the role of the franchise’s villain, Mister Sinister. Driver joins a growing ensemble that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Maya Boyd as Storm and Inde Navarrette as Rogue.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made the announcement onstage alongside director Jake Schreier during Disney’s Entertainment Showcase panel on August 14. The film now has an official release date of May 5, 2028, giving fans a concrete timeline for the mutant team’s live-action MCU debut.
Driver’s introduction leaned into a bit of theatrical misdirection before landing on the actual reveal. In the video, Marvel shared that Driver explained he assumed being told to “show up for X-Men” meant reporting to a set in California, only to find himself alone on a soundstage at Pinewood Studios instead.
He went on to say that he and Feige had “been talking for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” adding that they’d “finally found the perfect film at the perfect time.” Driver then began to reveal his role, starting to say “Magneto” before pivoting with a laugh to announce his real character: Nathaniel Milbury.
That name carries significant weight for longtime comic readers. Milbury is one of several aliases used by Mister Sinister, whose true identity in Marvel Comics is the Victorian-era geneticist Nathaniel Essex. The character has long been obsessed with mutant genetics and evolution, often manipulating other mutants, including members of the X-Men themselves, for his own experiments.
Sink’s casting as Jean Grey wasn’t technically new information, since the actress had already debuted in the role earlier this year as a mysterious antagonist in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Feige has previously teased that the upcoming ‘X-Men’ film will center heavily on Jean Grey’s story, which could hint at just how large a role Driver’s Mister Sinister ends up playing given the character’s deep comic book ties to Jean’s origins and the Phoenix mythology.
Connor, known for his work on ‘Heartstopper,’ takes on Cyclops, while Abbott, fresh off his role in ‘The Testament of Ann Lee,’ will play a young Professor X. Navarrette, who broke out in the film ‘Obsession,’ rounds out the cast as Rogue, alongside newcomer Maya Boyd as Storm.
Notably, Feige has indicated the casting process isn’t finished, meaning more mutant reveals could still be on the way before the film reaches theaters. It’s also unclear whether Mister Sinister will serve as the film’s primary antagonist or simply one piece of a larger villainous puzzle.
Driver’s name has circled the MCU for years without ever quite landing. He was previously rumored for roles in Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot, including both Doctor Doom and Reed Richards, though those talks reportedly never advanced far enough to result in an offer sticking.
Now, with Mister Sinister officially confirmed as his introduction to the franchise, Driver becomes the latest high-profile dramatic actor to cross over into the superhero genre following his work in ‘Star Wars’ and Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis.’ It’s also worth noting the film marks the live-action debut of Mister Sinister, a character who has never appeared on screen in any previous ‘X-Men’ film series.
Schreier, who previously directed 2025’s well-received ‘Thunderbolts*,’ will helm the project, giving Marvel another filmmaker with proven ensemble-balancing skills for a cast this large. With the team now assembled and a release date locked in, fans have roughly two years to speculate about exactly how this new ‘X-Men’ story will reshape the mutants’ place in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
