‘Agatha All Along’ Turns Out to Be MCU’s Least-Expensive Production To Date
‘Agatha All Along’ debuted last week with the first two episodes. The initial audience reactions were excellent while critics originally panned the show before the overall reception leveled out. The show is currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 83% approval rate by critics and an 82% approval rate by the audiences.
The show also managed to garner quite a few views, which is surprising considering the show is focused on a C-list character and has a premise unappealing to most casual MCU fans.
According to the latest numbers, the show attracted 9.3 million views in the first 7 days, which is less than other popular shows released in the last six months but still a big deal for ‘Agatha All Along’ especially considering the backlash the show drew due having a queer cast and queer themes.
Now ‘Agatha All Along’ has one more thing going for it, according to The Hollywood Reporter the show is the least expensive Marvel Studios production to date. The exact numbers haven’t been revealed but it does make sense if you take into account several factors.
First, despite the show being focused on magic, we’ve seen extremely little CGI so far with most of the show focusing on practical effects and practical sets.
The second factor is the number of episodes. ‘Agatha All Along’ will have 9 episodes in total, other MCU Disney+ shows had so far between 6 and 8 episodes, so even if ‘Agatha All Along’ had a higher overall budget than most of its shows it would still make it cheaper per episode number.
‘Loki,’ ‘Moon Knight,’ ‘Hawkeye,’ ‘Ms. Marvel,’ and ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ each had production costs of approximately $140-150 million for their six-episode runs. In contrast, ‘WandaVision’ and ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ cost around $225 million each, as they featured longer episode counts.
The most expensive series per episode is ‘Secret Invasion,’ which cost $212 million for six episodes. In contrast, the least expensive is ‘Echo,’ totaling just $40 million for its five-episode run.
When compared to Disney productions overall, ‘Agatha All Along’ is significantly cheaper than the notorious flop ‘The Acolyte’ whose production stood at a $180 Million budget for 8 episodes.
