Agent Coulson died several times over the course of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,’ and in ‘The Avengers,’ he just can seem to stay dead, which is, as it was always joked about, a superpower in itself.

Coulson died (for the last time so far) in ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ season 6 episode 5. In his final weeks, Coulson spent time in Tahiti with Melinda May, reflecting on their lives and discussing May’s idea to establish a S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy in his honor. While enjoying wine on the beach, Coulson felt chest pain returning and informed May. They fell asleep together, and Coulson passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Clark Gregg who portrayed the Coulson in the MCU recently spoke about what might be in store for the character during his interview with Love in the Time of Hydra: Agents of SHIELD Pod. Gregg is optimistic that Coulson will return now that Multiverse had been cracked open as there are many potential variants of the character still around:

[Coulson isn’t dead] in every timeline. “Look, you are playing in a Multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, ‘I don’t know, there’s many Multiverses here’ . . . People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin [Feige] is like ‘The Oz.

Gregg first appeared as Agent Coulson in 2008’s ‘Iron Man.’ Despite Coulson’s death in 2012’s ‘The Avengers,’ he was resurrected in Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ when it premiered on ABC in 2013. The show concluded in 2020, sparking debate among MCU fans about its connection to the big screen releases as it diverged from them over time with several plot holes. With the release of ‘Echo’ Netflix’s The Defenders were canonized but no such thing happened with ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ although there was some talk that ‘Captain Carter’ might be canonized.

Coulson’s death at the hands of Loki is part of the official timeline, however, his subsequent resurrections are currently nowhere to be seen.
