Aimee Garcia Breaks Her Silence on Renata’s Shocking Death in ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’
‘The Walking Dead: Dead City‘ has spent its third season quietly building something rare for this franchise, a functioning, hopeful community rising out of the ruins of Manhattan. That optimism made the show feel different from its predecessors, even as death has always lingered just beneath the surface of this world.
That tension finally broke wide open in the show’s penultimate episode, delivering one of the most unexpected losses of the season. Aimee Garcia’s Renata had been a driving force since the very first episode, helping steer Maggie’s vision for the community while simultaneously hunting down Negan for his past crimes.
In her final moments, Renata tried reasoning with Negan rather than resorting to violence, insisting she didn’t actually want to kill him and just wanted him to grow up. Bar owner Dillard, Negan’s unhinged former friend, wasn’t willing to accept that outcome, and the confrontation ended with him shooting Renata in the chest after declaring she wasn’t in charge because if she were, she could have stopped things from spiraling.
Garcia has now spoken about the death in detail, offering insight into what she believes was actually driving Dillard’s actions that night. She explained that she doesn’t think Dillard ever intended to kill Renata, describing it instead as an unfortunate domino effect set off once his two closest companions, a pair of walkers he’d grown emotionally attached to, ended up dead at Negan’s hands.
Garcia compared Dillard’s attachment to those walkers to Tom Hanks’ relationship with the volleyball in ‘Cast Away,’ telling TV Insider that Dillard had effectively declawed and defanged the creatures until they became his version of friends. Losing them, in her reading of the character, is what pushed him toward the violence that ultimately claimed Renata’s life.

The actress also weighed in on Renata’s own emotional state leading up to her death, particularly a moment where her character stomps on a walker outside the bar in a visible display of frustration and rage. Garcia attributed that outburst to everything piling up at once, pointing specifically to Renata never having had the chance to fully process watching the Croat kill her uncle in cold blood earlier in the season.
That unresolved grief adds another layer to Renata’s final confrontation with Dillard, suggesting her death wasn’t just about being caught in the crossfire of Dillard’s spiral, but also a consequence of carrying trauma she never got the space to work through. It’s a detail that recontextualizes some of her more volatile choices throughout the back half of the season.
Despite her character’s abrupt exit, Garcia made clear she isn’t disappointed with how the storyline played out. She’s spoken warmly about working opposite Jimmi Simpson, praising his range as an actor and predicting he’ll win an Oscar someday, calling him a true chameleon in the role of Dillard.
Renata’s death leaves Maggie and Negan with far fewer allies heading into the season finale, and it hands Dillard control of a community he’s spent the episode systematically dismantling from the inside. With Dillard now dressed in his old police uniform and holding hostages, the show has fully committed to a villain turn that Garcia’s insights suggest was rooted more in grief and attachment than pure malice.
Whatever happens next, Renata’s arc closes as one of the season’s most consequential storylines, shaping both the immediate crisis Maggie and Negan now face and the emotional stakes heading into the finale. Garcia’s perspective adds real depth to a death that could have easily played as shock value alone.
