Alan Cumming Opens up About BAFTA Incident That Left Many Viewers Traumatized
Alan Cumming has addressed the controversy surrounding this year’s BAFTA Film Awards, calling the broadcast “trauma triggering” and apologizing to those affected. The incident happened when a Tourette’s campaigner shouted a racial slur while two Black actors, Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, were presenting on stage.
The offensive word was heard on the BBC broadcast, sparking widespread criticism. Cumming, who hosted the ceremony on February 22, posted on Instagram saying “I’m so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt at hearing that word echoed around the world.”
He also expressed regret for the Tourette’s community, pointing out how the moment highlighted ongoing misunderstanding and lack of tolerance around the condition. The campaigner, John Davidson, has Tourette’s syndrome, which can cause involuntary vocal tics.
He later said that while he would never apologize for having the condition, he was sorry for the upset caused by his outburst. The BBC aired the ceremony on a two-hour delay but did not cut the racial slur, prompting an internal investigation and the temporary removal of the broadcast from iPlayer.
Cumming criticized the handling of the situation, saying everyone involved had been let down by decisions to both broadcast offensive language and censor free speech. He added.
“the only possible good that could come of this is a reminder that words matter, that rushing to judgement about things of which we are not fully cognisant is folly, that all trauma must be recognised and honoured.”
Delroy Lindo reflected on the incident as well, noting that he and Jordan “did what we had to do” when the slur was shouted, but he wished someone from BAFTA had spoken with them afterward.
The organization also apologized, saying it wanted to acknowledge the harm caused and review its live event protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. Beyond hosting, Alan Cumming continues to be active in film, television, and theatre. He currently hosts the U.S. version of The Traitors, which has been renewed for a fourth season.
The BAFTA controversy has sparked a larger conversation about how live events are broadcast, the responsibilities of organizers, and how sensitive moments involving medical conditions should be handled. Many see it as a reminder that careful planning and awareness are essential when dealing with real-world situations on a global stage.
