Alec Baldwin’s Brother Stephen Reveals Why He Left Hollywood

Actor Stephen Baldwin is sharing more about the personal journey that changed the direction of his life and career. The 60-year-old actor, known for films like The Usual Suspects, said his decision to step away from the traditional Hollywood path came after he found a deeper connection with his faith.

In an interview with People, Baldwin explained that he became fascinated by Christianity and his spiritual beliefs. “Jesus and the Holy Spirit fascinated me,” he told the publication.

Baldwin said that after his role as McManus in the 1995 crime thriller The Usual Suspects, he found himself at a turning point. He believed he had the opportunity to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but he realized that lifestyle was not what he wanted.

“I probably could have pointed myself in the direction of becoming a big star,” Baldwin said. “But that wasn’t me. I didn’t want to be Tom Cruise, and have to make $100 million at the box office.”

Instead of chasing fame and bigger movie roles, Baldwin said he wanted to stay true to himself. Reflecting on his New York upbringing, he joked, “I’d rather be a schmuck from Massapequa! I’m good at that!”

Baldwin’s faith journey developed over several years. He said important moments in his life included becoming sober in 1989, marrying his wife Kennya Baldwin in 1990, and later experiencing what he described as a spiritual awakening in 2001.

According to Baldwin, his family’s religious path began with an unusual experience involving a woman named Augusta, who came from Brazil to help his family after the birth of his daughter Alaia. Baldwin said Augusta believed she had received a message from God that she would eventually help guide the family toward Christianity.

At first, Baldwin admitted he did not take the idea seriously. He recalled telling his wife, “Hun, we’re from New York but we’re in Arizona and I think you need to go back into the air conditioning and lie down.”

However, his views began to change as he attended Christian events and met people who influenced him. Baldwin said one major moment came when he attended a gathering in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, featuring skateboarders who combined their sport with Christian messages.

He described watching young skateboarders perform tricks before sharing their faith with large crowds. Baldwin said the experience had a major impact on him and eventually led him to work on a project called Livin It, which mixed punk music, skate culture, and Christianity.

Baldwin told People that the project became successful, with thousands of copies distributed. He later traveled to churches across the country, visiting 125 churches over four years as part of the skate ministry.

The actor said his decision to focus more on faith-based work changed how some people in Hollywood viewed him. He explained that some members of the entertainment industry thought his beliefs made him different.

Baldwin, who is the brother of actors Alec Baldwin, William Baldwin, and Daniel Baldwin, said he is now happy with where life has taken him. He currently hosts the podcast One Bad Movie and works as a producer on Christian-themed films.

“I’m happy to be where I’m now at 60. I’m so blessed. And I absolutely believe that the best is yet to come,” Baldwin said.

Looking back at his career and personal life, Baldwin said he feels grateful for everything he has experienced. “I’ve done 100 movies, I’ve made more money that I could have wildly imagined, and I’m married to the hottest chick I’ve ever seen in my life.”

He added that his faith remains the most important part of his life today. “Jesus is my rock. My wife is my anchor. I’ve had the most amazing life and I’m only 60. I’m so blessed.”
