More than 25 years after the release of The Object of My Affection, Stephen Baldwin is opening up about his short time on the romantic comedy and the reason he says he was removed from the project.

According to Baldwin, the explanation he received at the time had nothing to do with his acting ability. Instead, he claims producers felt he was drawing too much attention in scenes with Jennifer Aniston.

Speaking on his podcast, One Bad Movie with Stephen Baldwin, during a conversation with comedian T.J. Miller, the actor revisited his experience working on the film before his departure. Baldwin said he had already begun filming when he was approached by a producer who informed him there was an issue.

According to Baldwin, the producer told him that he could not be funnier than Aniston in the movie. The actor admitted he initially thought the comment was a joke because the project was a romantic comedy.

“I don’t know. This isn’t to shred anybody. This is just simply to say ‘Hollywood is Hollywood,’” Baldwin said while discussing the situation.

At the time, reports surrounding his exit suggested there were creative disagreements regarding the role. Baldwin had originally been cast as Vince McBride, a major character in the film. After his departure, the role eventually went to Paul Rudd, who starred opposite Aniston in the finished version.

During the podcast discussion, Miller pointed out that Aniston herself is known for her comedic talent and suggested she likely was not responsible for the complaint. Baldwin agreed and said he never learned exactly where the note came from.

The actor also compared the experience to another early moment in his career. He recalled working on the 1989 war drama Casualties of War alongside Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn. Baldwin claimed he was asked to tone down his performance during that production as well before eventually being let go. Looking back, he said he later wondered whether factors such as his appearance or weight may have played a role.

Despite the controversy surrounding his departure, The Object of My Affection went on to become an important film in the careers of both Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd.

Released in 1998 and based on Stephen McCauley’s novel of the same name, the film tells the story of Nina, a pregnant social worker who develops strong feelings for her gay best friend George. At the time, the movie stood out from many mainstream romantic comedies because it explored friendship, love, and family in a more unconventional way.

While critical reactions were mixed upon release, the film has developed a loyal following over the years. Many viewers have praised its emotional storytelling and its willingness to tackle subjects that were less common in major studio romantic comedies during the late 1990s. The movie is also remembered as one of the earliest big-screen pairings of Aniston and Rudd, who would later become two of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.

Today, The Object of My Affection remains a memorable part of late-1990s romantic comedy history. And thanks to Baldwin’s recent comments, the film is once again attracting attention, with fans revisiting a behind-the-scenes story that remained largely untold for decades.
