‘Alice and Steve’ Is Officially Coming Back for Season 2, and the Cliffhanger Is Only the Beginning

British comedy has produced its fair share of messy, morally complicated friendships over the years, but few have generated quite as much heated dinner-table debate as this one. Since premiering earlier this summer, ‘Alice and Steve’ has managed to be both critically praised and genuinely divisive, thanks to a premise that dares viewers to pick a side.

The show follows Alice, played by Nicola Walker, whose world falls apart when her best friend Steve, played by Jemaine Clement, starts dating her 26-year-old daughter Izzy. What begins as a devastating betrayal for Alice spirals into an all-out feud, as she tries everything in her power to end the relationship while Steve proves more than ready to fight back. The show’s central age-gap storyline sparked plenty of online discourse following its release, with audiences split over how to feel about the central dynamic.

That mix of acclaim and controversy has clearly paid off. Disney+ and Hulu have officially renewed ‘Alice and Steve’ for a second season, confirming that Walker and Clement will both return to reprise their roles as the show’s central frenemies.

Creator and writer Sophie Goodhart didn’t hold back her excitement about the news. “I am so thrilled that ‘Alice and Steve’ has been given a second season,” Goodhart said in a statement. “No one will be prepared for what happens next, especially not Alice and Steve.”

The renewal follows a strong showing for the series on the festival circuit as well, with ‘Alice and Steve’ picking up multiple wins at Canneseries, including the Special Interpretation Award for its ensemble cast and the Student Award for Best Series. That recognition, paired with what producers are calling a striking cliffhanger ending to season one, appears to have sealed the deal for a second run.

Petra Fried, joint managing director at Clerkenwell Films, echoed that enthusiasm in her own statement, calling the show “brilliantly messy, funny and fearless” in its exploration of friendship and love, and adding that the team can’t wait for audiences to see what Goodhart has planned for “our favorite frenemies.” Lee Mason, Disney+’s VP of scripted for EMEA, pointed to the strength of the fan reaction as a key factor behind the renewal, describing the response from viewers as “rapturous” and noting that the show has struck a chord while sparking real debate among audiences.

Nicola Walker previously opened up about what drew her to the project in the first place, describing to The Hollywood Reporter just how eager she was to sign on. “I phoned my agent and went, ‘Please, please, I want to do this,'” Walker said. She went on to describe the show’s tone as unusual, explaining that when the balance between comedy and heartbreak lands, “it feels amazing,” and crediting Goodhart with writing something that’s very funny but can turn “really sad” and “brutally honest” without warning.

‘Alice and Steve’ is produced by Clerkenwell Films, part of BBC Studios, with Petra Fried, Sophie Gardiner, and Wim de Greef serving as executive producers alongside Goodhart. The series airs on Disney+ in the U.K. and Ireland, and on both Disney+ and Hulu in the United States, with all six episodes of season one currently available to stream.

With a cliffhanger ending still hanging over fans and a creator promising even messier territory ahead, ‘Alice and Steve’ looks poised to lean even further into the chaos that made its first season such a talking point.
