Amanda Peet Reveals Personal Struggle With Breast Cancer
Amanda Peet has shared her personal journey through breast cancer in a deeply honest essay for The New Yorker titled My Season of Ativan. The actress, known for films like Something’s Gotta Give, revealed that her diagnosis came at an especially difficult time as both of her parents were entering hospice care on opposite coasts.
Peet explained that despite having regular checkups, a routine ultrasound right before Labor Day led to sudden concern from her surgeon, who immediately scheduled a biopsy. The initial results showed a small tumor, and she waited anxiously for her receptor status.
Her doctor described it in unusual terms: “It’s like dogs. You have poodles on one end and, on the other, pit bulls.” When the results came in, her text from the doctor reassured her that her cancer showed all poodle features, meaning it was hormone-receptor-positive, HER2-negative, and more treatable.
She described the fleeting relief of that news before facing the reality of ongoing tests. An MRI revealed a second suspicious spot that required a precise MRI-guided biopsy. Peet compared the process to a “perverse game of Battleship” as doctors worked to locate the area.
Thankfully, the second mass was benign, allowing her to proceed with a lumpectomy and radiation instead of more aggressive treatments like chemotherapy or a double mastectomy.
Peet confirmed her cancer was Stage I and recounted the physical challenges of radiation. “Radiation wasn’t bad compared with Tom’s waffle iron—until the last stretch, when my nipple became charred and blistered, like an over-roasted marshmallow,” she shared with characteristic humor and honesty.
Earlier this year, she received a clear scan, marking a major milestone in her recovery. Her journey coincided with intense personal grief, as she navigated the loss of her father and the final days of her mother.
She recalled a tender moment with her mother: greeting her with “howdy doodle” and then sitting together in silence as her mother’s life came to a close. Even during her recovery, Peet has remained active professionally.
She recently created and showran the Netflix series The Chair and is now producing the Apple TV+ thriller Your Friends and Neighbors, starring Jon Hamm as a divorced hedge fund manager who spirals into petty crime and danger.
She is also reportedly developing a new stage production for 2027 and continues to support her husband, David Benioff’s epic sci-fi project, 3 Body Problem, which has been renewed for additional seasons.
Peet is now using her experience to advocate for breast cancer awareness and regular screenings, highlighting the challenges of balancing personal health with caregiving responsibilities. Her openness about facing cancer while processing grief has resonated with many, offering both inspiration and solidarity.
