Amanda Seyfried Talks About Her Mental Health and Lexapro Use Since 19
Amanda Seyfried is opening up about her long relationship with mental health care, revealing she has been taking Lexapro since she was 19. The actress, now 40, has spoken out about the importance of normalizing medication, comparing it to any other tool people use to stay healthy. This information comes from a recent interview she gave at the premiere of Mona Fastvold’s short film Discipline.
Seyfried explained that her treatment is a steady part of her daily life. She made a candid joke about how it affects her personal priorities, saying, I’ve been on Lexapro since I was 19, so s*x is not number one, number two, number three, number four, or number five.* She added that she is comfortable with this balance, putting her mental health and role as a mother first.
She started Lexapro to manage obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe anxiety, which showed up as intense health worries. Over twenty years later, she feels there is no reason to stop a treatment that has kept her grounded throughout the ups and downs of a Hollywood career. She has said, I don’t see the point of getting off of it if it continues to work.
The premiere of Discipline was held at Angelika East and celebrated a collaboration with Miu Miu, highlighting themes of movement and dance. Seyfried, who stars in the film, admitted she hadn’t seen the final cut before the event. She also praised Fastvold’s direction, saying female directors bring a nurturing energy that allows her to fully trust her performance.
Outside of this project, Seyfried has had a busy year. She earned a Golden Globe nomination and won at the Astra Film Awards for her role in The Testament of Ann Lee, portraying the founder of the Shaker movement. The role included intense ritualistic dances, which she described as challenging but rewarding.
She also appeared alongside Sydney Sweeney in the psychological thriller The Housemaid, released in December. In the film, Seyfried plays Nina Winchester, a wealthy woman hiding dangerous secrets. The movie has been a box office success, grossing over $350 million worldwide.
Fans can also see Seyfried in the Peacock limited series Long Bright River, where she plays a Philadelphia police officer searching for her missing sister amid a serial killer investigation. She continues to advocate for a Mamma Mia 3 project and has suggested pop star Sabrina Carpenter join the cast.
Through her acting and her openness about mental health, Amanda Seyfried continues to show that she is fearless, honest, and committed to both her craft and her personal well-being.
