Amazon Prime Video Announces Final Installment of Beloved Series Will Be a Movie
Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty will get one last trip to Cousins, as Amazon Prime Video has confirmed a movie to wrap up the hit YA romantic drama series.
The announcement came at the series’ finale red carpet event in Paris, France, with exact plot details still under wraps. The film will be directed by series creator and author Jenny Han, who is co-writing it with Sarah Kucserka.
The show concluded its third season on Prime Video on Wednesday, finally revealing who Belly (Lola Tung) chooses between Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). True to the books, Belly ends up with Conrad, the boy she’s loved all along.
Courtenay Valenti, head of film, streaming, and theatrical at Amazon MGM Studios, along with Vernon Sanders, Global Head of Television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said, “The Summer I Turned Pretty has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation. We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”
Jenny Han added, “There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due. I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”
The Summer I Turned Pretty first premiered on June 17, 2022, with seven episodes. Its second season debuted on July 14, 2023, with eight episodes, and the third and final season premiered on July 16, featuring 11 episodes.
The show follows Belly Conklin as she navigates a love triangle with brothers Conrad and Jeremiah, based on Jenny Han’s popular novel trilogy.
Critics praised the series for its coming-of-age storytelling and performances. Rotten Tomatoes reported an 88% approval rating for the first season, with critics calling it “a solidly charming and sweet rom-com with appeal across generations.” Metacritic gave it a score of 72 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.
Season two explored heavier themes, like grief and loss, and received mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 62% approval rating, while Metacritic scored it 71. Critics praised Lola Tung’s performance, with Kayleigh Donaldson of TheWrap commenting, “The season is at its best when it focuses on Belly, giving space to her emotional strife and the oft-derided difficulties of being a teenage girl in a world where you’re positioned as something between a sex object and a punching bag.”
The third season saw a positive critical response, earning an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series’ mix of romance, teen drama, and emotional depth made it a hit with audiences worldwide.
Fans will be excited to see Belly’s story fully concluded in a movie. It’s a smart move to give the series a proper send-off and honor Jenny Han’s original vision. What do you think about ending the show with a film? Share your thoughts in the comments.
