‘Andor’ Star Diego Luna Lands Role in Disney’s Highly Anticipated Live-Action Remake
Diego Luna is the latest major name added to Disney’s highly anticipated live-action ‘Tangled’ remake, and his casting comes with a twist that has fans buzzing.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Luna will play a role created entirely for this new film, meaning he will not be stepping into the shoes of any character from the beloved original animated feature. Details on the mystery role are being kept firmly under wraps, adding an extra layer of intrigue around one of Disney’s most anticipated upcoming projects.
Luna joins previously announced leads Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, who will play Rapunzel and Flynn Rider respectively, alongside Kathryn Hahn, who is set to portray the villainous Mother Gothel. The casting of Hahn, fresh off acclaim in ‘Agatha All Along’ and ‘The Studio’, makes her one of the most exciting additions to the ensemble, and Luna’s inclusion only raises the film’s profile further.
Michael Gracey, whose musical credits include ‘The Greatest Showman’, is directing from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor. The project will lean heavily into its musical roots, much like the original animated film, though it remains unclear at this stage whether Luna’s new character will require him to sing.
Luna is already a familiar face within the Disney ecosystem, having earned Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice Award nominations for his acclaimed lead performance in ‘Andor’, the ‘Star Wars’ prequel series on Disney Plus. This ‘Tangled’ role marks his first time crossing over into Disney’s live-action film slate beyond the galaxy far, far away.
The live-action ‘Tangled’ remake has had a complicated path to production, having been placed on indefinite hold in April 2025 following the disappointing box office performance of Disney’s live-action ‘Snow White’, before resuming development in October 2025 after the blockbuster success of ‘Lilo and Stitch’. Production is currently set to begin in Spain in June.
The original animated ‘Tangled’, directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, earned an Academy Award nomination for its original song and grossed over $590 million worldwide, becoming one of the films that helped revitalize Disney’s princess genre for a new generation. With a cast this strong and Gracey’s musical sensibilities at the helm, expectations for the live-action version are already sky high.
