‘Animals’ on Netflix Isn’t Based on a Book or a True Story, and That Makes Ben Affleck’s Kidnapping Thriller Even More Intriguing

If you have been wondering what Ben Affleck’s ‘Animals‘ is based on, the answer is refreshingly simple. The political crime thriller is an original idea that does not draw on any source material, and it was first announced back in 2024. In an era packed with sequels, remakes and book adaptations, that alone sets it apart.

The film is set to reach viewers very soon, with a global Netflix premiere on October 9 and a limited theatrical run in North America on the same date. Here is everything we know about where the story came from, who wrote it, and who is bringing it to life.

What Is ‘Animals’ Based On?

The short answer is nothing. Affleck and his collaborators built the story from scratch rather than adapting a novel, a comic or real events. That means viewers are walking in without any existing canon to compare it against.

The project has had a few identities along the way. It previously carried the working titles ‘The Animals of Los Angeles’ and ‘Be Gentlemen’ before settling on its current name. Both earlier titles hint at the Los Angeles setting and the morally murky world the story inhabits.

As for the story itself, the official logline follows a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife who get drawn into a web of deception after their son is kidnapped. While scrambling to raise the ransom, they are forced into choices that could tear their world apart. It is a premise that blends campaign trail pressure with the kind of high stakes parental panic that thrillers thrive on.

The Writers Behind the ‘Animals’ Screenplay

The script has a layered history. It began as a story by Connor McIntyre, with Billy Ray handling a rewrite. Affleck also shares a writing credit alongside McIntyre and Ray.

Ray brings serious thriller credentials to the table. His previous work includes ‘Captain Phillips’ and ‘Breach.’ That track record suggests a screenplay built on tension and character pressure rather than empty twists.

The road to the screen was not smooth. Damon was originally meant to star with Affleck only directing, but issues with the rights forced the project onto the shelf. By the time it was ready to move again, Damon had committed to Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ so Affleck decided to take the lead role himself.

Damon has not disappeared from the picture though. He is producing the film through Artists Equity alongside Affleck and several partners. Their company has a multi year deal with Netflix to make original films.

Ben Affleck’s ‘Animals’ Cast

Affleck is front and center. He plays a politician running for mayor of Los Angeles, and the character is named Milo Bradford. Kerry Washington and Gillian Anderson star opposite him.

The ensemble runs deep. Adriana Paz, Ray Fisher, Matt Gerald, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Steven Yeun round out the cast. That is a lineup with plenty of range, from prestige drama to action.

Some of the casting carries a bit of fan service. Fisher’s involvement is a mini reunion for DC fans, since he played Cyborg opposite Affleck’s Batman in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League.’ Yeun also worked with Affleck previously on ‘The Rip.’

The music is in familiar hands too. Composer Harry Gregson-Williams is reuniting with Affleck after scoring ‘Gone Baby Gone,’ ‘The Town’ and ‘Live by Night.’ Considering how moody and propulsive those earlier soundtracks were, it is a promising match for a kidnapping story.

‘Animals’ Release Date and Where to Watch

Mark your calendar for October 9. The film arrives globally on Netflix that day, with a limited theatrical run in North America. What’s on Netflix highlights it as the headline movie of the streamer’s October lineup.

The marketing has been ramping up steadily. The first trailer dropped in August and was described as a nail biter. A second trailer and a new poster followed shortly before release.

For Affleck, this is a significant moment on the streamer. It marks his fourth major Netflix original and follows the big success of ‘The Rip.’ With a high profile ensemble and a story nobody has seen before, it has all the makings of a conversation starter. And now that Affleck has stepped into the lead role once meant for Damon, do you think the film is better for the switch, or would you have loved to see that old pairing play out on screen?
