Anne Hathaway & Ewan McGregor’s New Sci-Fi ‘The End of Oak Street’ Movie Gets Its First Reactions
Warner Bros. may finally have another movie that can turn things around at the box office.
The studio has started holding press screenings for The End of Oak Street, the new sci-fi survival movie from David Robert Mitchell. Early reactions from people who have seen the film are already appearing online, and the first signs look encouraging.
The Hollywood Reporter says the movie has received a strong early response on social media following several recent screenings. Full reviews are still under embargo and are expected to arrive on August 12, two days before the film reaches theaters on August 14.
The movie follows the Platt family, played by Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery. Their lives change completely when a strange cosmic event suddenly tears their suburban neighborhood away from the rest of the world.
Instead of simply dealing with an unusual disaster, the family finds itself in a strange and unknown environment. They quickly realize that staying together may be their only chance to survive.
The official logline describes the story this way: “After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.”
Mitchell is taking on several jobs behind the camera. He wrote, directed and produced the movie after previously making the horror hit It Follows and the unusual 2018 film Under the Silver Lake.
The movie also has some major names behind it. J.J. Abrams serves as a producer alongside Hannah Minghella, Jon Cohen, Matt Jackson and Tommy Harper.
Abrams has also been at the center of one of the biggest rumors surrounding the film. Some fans have wondered whether The End of Oak Street could secretly be connected to the Cloverfield universe, especially because of its strange sci-fi premise and Abrams’ involvement.
However, Abrams has already denied that theory.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams explained that the only connection is Ewan McGregor’s partner, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who starred in 10 Cloverfield Lane.
“The only connection to our Cloverfield movies is that Ewan’s partner is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who was the star of 10 Cloverfield Lane, who we were very lucky to get to work with and who I adore,” Abrams said. “So there was that, but other than that, people are just making connections that they happen to see.”
The End of Oak Street is also arriving at an important moment for Warner Bros. The studio had a strong 2025 with movies including Sinners, A Minecraft Movie, Superman, Final Destination Bloodlines, Weapons and One Battle After Another performing well.
This year has been much tougher. The Bride!, Mortal Kombat II and Supergirl have all struggled badly at the box office, while Wuthering Heights has been one of the studio’s few major successes.
That puts extra pressure on The End of Oak Street to deliver. For now, the early social media reactions suggest the movie could be exactly the kind of hit Warner Bros. needs.
The full reviews will arrive August 12, with the movie opening nationwide on August 14.
