Apple TV+ Renews Hit Sci-Fi Series Foundation for Season 4 After 90% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Apple TV+ has officially renewed its sci-fi series Foundation for a fourth season, just before the third season finale streams this Friday.
The series, based on Isaac Asimov’s classic stories, has built a strong following with its mix of epic storytelling and complex characters.
Co-showrunners and executive producers Ian Goldberg and David Kob expressed their excitement about continuing the series. “There is no series quite like Foundation, and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four. We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to be working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business,” they said.
Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, praised the show’s global appeal. “It’s been fantastic to watch Foundation become such a global phenomenon, with fans tuning in from every corner of the world. With each new season, the excitement around this trailblazing sci-fi epic just keeps building due to the bold storytelling and collective artistry of this extraordinarily talented cast and creative team. We’re excited to keep exploring this universe together in season four,” he added.
The series stars Jared Harris, Lee Pace, and Lou Llobell, along with Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, Terrence Mann, and Rowena Kingwith. Season three added Cherry Jones, Brandon P. Bell, Synnøve Karlsen, Cody Fern, Tómas Lemarquis, Alexander Siddig, Troy Kotsur, and Pilou Asbæk. Paramount Television Studios produces the show, with Goldberg, Kob, Bill Bost, Lee Pace, Michael Satrazemis, Robyn Asimov, and David S. Goyer serving as executive producers for the new season.
Foundation has been praised by critics, with the third season holding a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 20 reviews. The site noted, “Foundation’s narratively knotty third season doesn’t quite measure up to its superb predecessor, but this sci-fi epic endures as a faithful and well-acted adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s masterpiece.” On Metacritic, the season has a score of 83 out of 100, signaling “universal acclaim.”
The show has also been recognized in the industry, receiving nominations and awards from groups including the Visual Effects Society, the American Society of Cinematographers, the Art Directors Guild, and the Critics’ Choice Super Awards. Highlights include a Visual Effects Society win for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode.
