‘Armor Wars’ Gets a Huge Production Update After Months of Silence

Marvel Studios has plenty of projects scheduled either to be released or developed in the next few years. And while for most of the projects, it’s clear at which stage they are currently at one movie has been in development hell for several years now, with mostly bits and pieces coming to light. Of course, we’re talking about War Machine’s movie ‘Armor Wars.’

‘Armor Wars’ was imagined to be a movie based on the comic storyline of the same name, and it was supposed to be a sequel to Secret Invasion (released last year) and Ironheart (unknown release date at the moment). Back in 2011, Don Cheadle confirmed that a War Machine film was in development, and Joe Rober Cole had been hired to write it.

But, 9 years later, During Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, it was announced that the ‘Armor Wars’ television series is in development for Disney+, with Don Cheadle still set to reprise his role as James Rhodes. In 2021, Cheadle also announced that the series would start production in just a couple of months.

In August 2021, Yassir Lester was appointed as the head writer for the series. However, in September 2022, Marvel Studios opted to transform the series into a feature film, retaining Don Cheadle and Yassir Lester as part of the project. Filming was anticipated to start in early 2023 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, but then the historical SAG-AFTRA strike began, and it paralyzed the entertainment industry as a whole.

Now Production Weekly reports that production on ‘Armor Wars’ will begin in 2025. This aligns with what we reported several months ago that the studio plans to lock in a director in Q1 of 2024 and begin shooting in 2025.

Sam Rockwell also reportedly had talks with the executives to reprise his role as Justine Hammer. Rockwell’s most recent MCU project was ‘What If…?’ Season 2, during which he gave voice to Justin Hammer.
