‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Directors the Russo Brothers Could Soon Become the Highest-Grossing Directors in History

Superhero cinema has produced plenty of box office milestones over the years, but few filmmaking duos have shaped that landscape quite like Anthony and Joe Russo. Their run behind the camera on some of Marvel’s biggest team-up films has already cemented them among the most commercially successful directors working today.

That success traces back to a string of MCU blockbusters that redefined what a superhero movie could earn worldwide. Starting with 2014’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ the Russos went on to direct ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ with the latter two ranking among the highest-grossing films ever released.

Now, with two more massive Marvel installments on the horizon, the Russos find themselves within striking distance of an even loftier milestone. Currently sitting fourth on the list of highest-grossing directors of all time with a combined $6.76 billion in worldwide box office, the brothers could realistically climb all the way to the top spot depending on how their next two films perform.

That current ranking places them just behind Christopher Nolan, who recently overtook them following the massive success of ‘The Odyssey,’ pushing his own career total to roughly $7.35 billion. Ahead of Nolan sit the two directors who have long dominated this list, James Cameron with approximately $10.59 billion and Steven Spielberg, the all-time leader, with around $10.94 billion.

What makes the Russos’ position so compelling isn’t just where they currently stand, but what’s coming next. ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ is set to arrive in theaters on December 18, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027, with the two films together projected to bring in more than $5 billion combined based on typical Avengers-tentpole performance.

If those projections hold anywhere close to accurate, the Russos would comfortably reclaim their spot ahead of Nolan and could potentially close the gap on both Cameron and Spielberg as well. It’s a scenario that would have seemed unthinkable just a decade ago, when the brothers were still primarily known for their sitcom work on shows like ‘Community’ before Marvel handed them the reins to ‘The Winter Soldier.’

Their MCU output alone tells the story of how quickly that trajectory changed. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ pulled in roughly $2.05 billion worldwide, while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ brought in an even more staggering $2.8 billion, briefly overtaking Cameron’s own ‘Avatar’ as the highest-grossing film of all time before eventually being surpassed again.

With Robert Downey Jr. returning in a new role and the X-Men reportedly factoring into the story, ‘Doomsday’ has generated enormous anticipation well ahead of its release, suggesting the film is well-positioned to perform at the scale needed to meaningfully move the Russos up the all-time rankings. Whether that translates into genuinely threatening Cameron and Spielberg’s positions remains to be seen, but the mathematical path is clearly there if both films land anywhere close to expectations.

For now, the Russos remain in a fascinating holding pattern, close enough to box office history that two strong openings could rewrite where they ultimately land among cinema’s most commercially successful filmmakers.
