‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Display Shows Doctor Doom Collecting Multiversal Artifacts, Including a Piece of the Venom Symbiote

Marvel has never been shy about using conventions to feed fan theories, and New York Comic Con 2026 is no exception. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving in December, the studio has been steadily building out the world around Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. This weekend, that world became something fans could walk through.

Doom has been positioned as the central villain of the Multiverse Saga since his casting was revealed. A synopsis shown at the Disney Merchandise Expo in China described him as a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic who will unleash a cascading crisis across the entire multiverse. Marvel has kept most story details under wraps, though, so every new clue draws intense scrutiny.

At NYCC, which runs October 8 to 11, Marvel set up a display of Doctor Doom’s lab filled with artifacts from across the MCU. The collection includes a sample of the Venom symbiote, along with Cyclops’ visor and a broken piece of the Silver Surfer’s board. Other reported items include Ultron’s head and Thanos’ broken helmet.

The presentation framed Doom as a collector rather than a conventional conqueror. The messaging suggested he is not building an army but gathering powerful artifacts from the multiverse. That fits the idea that his plan is as much about acquiring power as it is about open warfare.

Each object carries a story. A piece of the Venom symbiote hints at a connection to the Spider-Man side of the MCU, and some fans have linked it to a symbiote sample left behind in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. It also raises the possibility that Venom could make his way into the MCU in the larger saga.

Cyclops’ visor is another notable inclusion, since X-Men characters are expected to return in ‘Doomsday’. The broken piece of the Silver Surfer’s board points to the Fantastic Four side of the story. Marvel’s comics have a history here too, since in a 1966 story Doom drained the Surfer of his Power Cosmic and flew off on his board.

Fans and outlets alike have been quick to theorize. One reading is that Doom is gathering these objects to become strong enough to defeat the Avengers. Another is that the symbiote could set up Venom’s arrival in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ rather than in ‘Doomsday’, which already has plenty to establish.

There is also talk that the display could help explain the post-credits scene of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which drew a mixed reaction. None of this has been confirmed by Marvel. For now, the lab is a teaser rather than an answer, and it is designed to be read that way.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron. The ensemble includes members of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and the ‘Thunderbolts*’ team. It opens on December 18, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel showed a trailer exclusively in Hall H that was not released online. It featured Doom on a throne and a destroyed New York. Fans who were not there have been left to piece the story together from fragments like these.

The lab is part of a larger Doomsday push at NYCC. Marvel partnered with Heroes & Villains on a Latverian marketplace booth inspired by Doom’s homeland, complete with apparel and accessories. Together, the booth and the lab show how seriously the studio is treating its marketing build-up.

That strategy tends to work. Each prop, display and costume gives fans something to dissect before a single new frame of footage is released. With Doom collecting so many powerful items, the questions only multiply.

The coming weeks will likely bring more teasers as the December release approaches. Whether the symbiote sample leads to a Venom debut or simply serves as an Easter egg, it has already sparked a lively conversation. For Marvel, that is exactly the intended effect.

What do you think Doctor Doom is planning with his multiversal artifact collection?
