‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Gets a New Doctor Doom Card in ‘Magic: The Gathering’, and the Latverian Witches Come With Him

Doctor Doom has spent the year conquering new territory, and the tabletop is no exception. Since Marvel’s crossover set landed in late June, the ruler of Latveria has become a headline presence in ‘Magic: The Gathering’. His ‘Doctor Doom, King of Latveria’ card fronts the ‘Doom Prevails’ Commander deck, which has reportedly been the most popular precon in the set.

That popularity lines up with the film he is about to headline. ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ opens in theaters on December 18, with Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom and Joe and Anthony Russo back in the director’s chair. Marvel’s rollout has leaned heavily on Doom imagery, from the throne to the mask.

Now a fresh piece of artwork is adding more fuel. The new look shows Doom standing center frame in his green cloak and armor, one fist clenched, while three hooded figures in metallic masks flank him. These are the Latverian Witches, and the card is marked as a promo with art credited to Jorge Molina.

The card itself is the same Doom fans already know from the Commander deck. It is a 3/3 Legendary Creature — Human Noble Villain costing {1}{U}{B}{R}. Whenever you discard land cards, each opponent loses 2 life, and at the beginning of combat, a Villain you control gains menace and connives.

The promo appears to be the exclusive card that Regal Cinemas announced earlier this year. Moviegoers who are Regal Crown Club members can claim a ‘Doctor Doom, King of Latveria’ promo by seeing ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in Infinity Vision on opening weekend. The design hadn’t been shown at the time of that announcement, so this art may be its first look.

The witches have been one of the biggest mysteries of Marvel’s promotional run. Costumes labeled ‘Latverian Witch’ quietly appeared at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con display in July, with no explanation. The robes showed up in several colors, which set off theories about a whole coven serving Doom.

Then, on October 3, Marvel released a new poster at Comic-Con Málaga. It put Doom in front of three masked witches in differently colored robes. The studio hasn’t linked any color to a named character, and the artwork doesn’t show them using magic.

That hasn’t stopped fans from guessing. Some speculate that the red-robed figure is Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, that the purple one is Charlize Theron’s Clea, and that the green one is Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie. None of that is confirmed.

The card art echoes the poster’s composition, with Doom at the center, the trio at his sides and a moody green backdrop. Seeing the witches on official merchandise suggests they are a deliberate part of how Marvel wants audiences to picture Doom’s court.

Plot details for the film remain tightly guarded. Marvel has confirmed that Doom is the main villain and that the Fantastic Four are involved. Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh and Vanessa Kirby are among the stars joining Downey Jr., and the film opens opposite ‘Dune: Part Three’.

For collectors, the timing is a gift. A Doom promo card tied to an opening-weekend screening gives fans a physical souvenir of the film. Doom’s cards have also pushed demand in the wider Marvel set, with one ‘Doctor Octopus’ card jumping close to 400% in days because of its pairing with Doom.

Whether you are a Commander player or just here for the lore, the card shows how much of Marvel’s marketing is now built around Doom’s world. The Latverian Witches may be the biggest mystery of the lot.

Who do you think is hiding behind the Latverian Witches’ masks in Avengers: Doomsday?
