‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Gets a New Look in ScreenX, and IMAX Fans Might Be Jealous

Avengers: Doomsday‘ has spent months navigating one of the trickiest theatrical rollouts in recent Marvel history, forced to get creative with premium formats after losing out on a coveted release perk. That challenge has pushed Disney and Marvel toward some genuinely unconventional solutions as the film’s December release date approaches.

The film currently has no access to IMAX screens in the United States for at least its opening three weeks, since ‘Dune: Part Three’ opens the same day and holds exclusive domestic IMAX rights during that window. Rather than fight that battle, Marvel has instead leaned into a growing lineup of alternative premium formats designed to give audiences an equally immersive theatrical experience.

That strategy is now extending to ScreenX, with new footage showing exactly how ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will look in the format’s distinctive panoramic setup. The clip contrasts a standard 2.39:1 screen presentation against the ScreenX version, which extends the film’s imagery across the side walls of the auditorium for a full 270-degree viewing experience.

ScreenX works by using ceiling-mounted projectors that display digital extensions of a scene onto the theater’s side walls, effectively pulling action that would normally disappear off-frame into the audience’s peripheral vision. Marvel previously tested this same approach with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which became the first MCU film shot specifically with ScreenX auditoriums in mind, according to CJ 4DPLEX, the company behind the technology.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is also being promoted through Disney’s newly created “Infinity Vision” certification, a designation for premium large format theaters that guarantees moviegoers big screens, bright images, and strong sound quality without introducing any entirely new technology of its own. Disney rolled out the certification ahead of September’s re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ before extending it to ‘Doomsday’s’ own marketing push.

Beyond ScreenX and Infinity Vision, premium formats including 4DX and RPX have also been available for ticket sales since July 20, giving audiences multiple ways to experience the film depending on what’s available in their market. General ticket sales for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opened on August 14, roughly four months ahead of the film’s release.

The film is set to open in theaters on December 18, with a reported runtime of 165 minutes that Marvel has cautioned isn’t yet finalized. Preview screenings are expected to begin the evening before on December 17, giving fans their first proper look at the culmination of a story that’s been building since ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Despite missing out on IMAX domestically during its crucial opening weeks, some international markets will still offer the film in that format, and Disney has built out an official finder tool to help audiences locate certified Infinity Vision auditoriums near them. The flagship location for that premium experience is Disney’s own El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.

With so many premium format options now competing for attention ahead of the film’s release, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ appears determined to prove that missing out on IMAX doesn’t have to mean missing out on spectacle.
