‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Just Broke a Box Office Record Before Anyone’s Even Seen the Movie

Marvel Studios has spent the past several years navigating a complicated relationship with box office expectations, watching some releases soar while others struggled to recapture the franchise’s former dominance. That uncertainty has made every fresh data point surrounding the studio’s upcoming slate feel especially significant heading into the end of the year.

Nowhere has that anticipation been more visible than with the studio’s next mega-scale team-up event, a film that’s been generating headlines for months before a single frame has played for general audiences. Between a trailer drop that broke viewership records and an aggressive premium ticketing rollout, the buzz around this release has shown no signs of slowing.

That momentum has now translated into a genuinely staggering statistic. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has reportedly surpassed $20 million in domestic pre-sales, a figure that marks the biggest advance ticket total ever recorded this far ahead of a film’s official release date, according to tracking data shared by Global Box Office.

What makes the number even more striking is the timing. The film doesn’t hit theaters until December 18, meaning it’s still roughly four months away from release, and tickets have only been available at a limited 1,000 domestic theaters through Marvel’s premium Infinity Vision format.

The presale surge builds on an already record-setting rollout that began the moment tickets went live. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ generated $16.5 million in advance ticket sales within its first 24 hours of availability, a figure that landed at twice the first-day presales of 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, despite that film having every format and screen available at launch compared to Doomsday’s restricted premium rollout.

That early total climbed to $19 million within roughly two weeks, according to tracking figures, before continuing its steady climb past the $20 million mark heading into mid-August. It’s a pace that has industry watchers taking notice, particularly given the format restrictions working against the film.

Notably, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ won’t have access to IMAX screens domestically for the first three weeks of its release, since Warner Bros. secured exclusivity for ‘Dune: Part Three’, which shares the same December 18 release date. Marvel has instead leaned heavily on its newly trademarked Infinity Vision certification, a premium large-format standard designed to secure top-tier theater real estate ahead of that direct competition.

Much of the excitement driving these numbers ties directly back to the film’s ensemble, led by Robert Downey Jr.’s surprising return to the MCU as Doctor Doom, alongside Chris Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers. Several X-Men actors from the Fox-Marvel era are also confirmed to appear, along with the returning Fantastic Four, giving the film an unusually large cross-franchise appeal heading into release.

Industry analysts have already begun projecting a massive opening weekend for the film, with early estimates placing the domestic debut somewhere in the range of $230 million to $260 million. Whether those projections hold will ultimately depend on how audiences respond once the film actually opens nationwide across roughly 4,000 domestic screens.

For context, the last time the entire Avengers roster assembled on screen was 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which delivered the largest opening weekend of all time and remains the second-highest grossing film ever released. Whether ‘Doomsday’ can approach that kind of cultural and commercial impact remains one of the biggest open questions heading into the holiday season.

With four months still standing between now and its theatrical debut, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has already rewritten the presale record books before a single ticketholder has set foot in a theater.
