‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Just Out-Sold ‘Endgame’ in Germany in a Single Day

For years, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has been the benchmark every superhero event gets measured against. The 2019 film set opening weekend records, finished with about $2.9 billion worldwide, and held a presale record in Germany for 7 years. Any film that wants to beat it needs to do so in the market where it counts: ticket demand.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been chasing that target for months. Premium-format tickets went on sale July 20 with the first trailer, and the film pulled in $16.5 million on its first day across roughly 1,000 domestic theaters. Tickets then opened nationwide on August 14, and Disney has said domestic advance sales topped $50 million.

Now one of Europe’s biggest markets has delivered a headline number. According to Disney, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ sold 118,000 tickets in its first 24 hours of presales in Germany. That beats the 105,000 tickets ‘Endgame’ sold in the same window in 2019, and it is more than any previous film from The Walt Disney Company Germany.

Timing makes the number more striking. German presales opened on October 5, more than 2 months before the film’s German release on December 16, 2 days ahead of its US debut. By contrast, ‘Endgame’ began selling tickets roughly 3 weeks before its release, which means ‘Doomsday’ set its mark with far more time on the calendar.

The film will also be offered in Infinity Vision, Disney’s new certification for select premium large-format cinemas. Fans described a chaotic booking experience, with some saying it took 45 minutes to secure tickets and that they had never seen anything like it in Germany. Many reported long waits and frustration, which points to the scale of demand.

Germany is not the only market showing early strength. In the Netherlands, Disney said more than 50,000 tickets were sold within roughly a day of sales opening, beating the previous record held by ‘Endgame’, which sold 42,000 in 24 hours. Reports also indicate ‘Doomsday’ is surpassing the first days of ‘Endgame’ sales in multiple European countries, including Spain.

Those results come with an extra challenge: tickets are more expensive in Europe than they were in 2019. That makes the volume more impressive. It also suggests the draw goes beyond hardcore fans.

Globally, ‘Doomsday’ passed $100 million in presales on October 6, according to tracking firm Global Box Office, and has reportedly climbed to around $125 million since then. In Brazil and the UK, it became the fastest film to reach $1 million in pre-release sales. Early projections put its domestic opening between $260 million and $300 million, with some speculation about a $1 billion worldwide debut.

There are important caveats. ‘Endgame’ had an estimated $140 million in presales by its release, a mark ‘Doomsday’ appears to be chasing. Domestically, the film has trailed both ‘Endgame’ and record-holder ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in total advance sales, even though it ran about 65% ahead of the latter after 2 days. And the German comparison measures only the first 24 hours, not the final total.

Several factors help explain the surge. Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom is a major draw, along with the film’s huge ensemble, which includes Thor, Ant-Man and Yelena Belova. The crossover story brings the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four together against a threat none of them can handle alone.

A strong marketing run has helped too, including the ‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ re-release that offered a first look at the new film, trailers and promotional tie-ins. It is also worth noting that no major blockbuster has opened presales this early, so nobody knows how well early tickets will predict the final result. Still, the early signals are hard to ignore.

The film arrives in theaters on December 18 in the US, the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’, and the competition for premium screens adds extra intrigue. ‘Dune’ holds the full US IMAX footprint for 3 weeks, while ‘Doomsday’ leans on Infinity Vision and its sheer fan base. For now, Germany’s numbers add another data point to a presale story that keeps growing.

Do you think ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can surpass ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at the global box office?
