‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Internationally Are Rewriting the Record Books, Tracker Says
Marvel has spent years chasing the feeling of a true event movie, and this year’s box office has shown just how hungry audiences still are for one. After a summer in which ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set new records, attention has swung to the franchise’s next big swing.
Early ticket sales are now giving analysts their first real clues, and one tracker’s latest numbers from Mexico are turning heads.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ raised expectations for the entire genre. It is the second-highest-grossing superhero film ever with about $2.45 billion worldwide, and it set a domestic opening weekend record of roughly $360 million.
That makes it a tough benchmark for any follow-up. It also explains why box office watchers are so focused on how ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is selling compared with Spider-Man’s run.
A tracker known as Carlangonz, who posts data on the Box Office Theory forums, shared new numbers on Mexican presales. After a week of regular sales and nearly two weeks of Infinity Vision sales, ‘Doomsday‘ has already surpassed the entire sales cycle of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and is close to 7% up on that benchmark.
It is also running at nearly 89% of the total opening day sales of ‘Brand New Day’. In the sample, ‘Doomsday’ has made nearly 3.5 times the full presale run of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and 3.2 times that of ‘Superman’.
Occupancy across the tracker’s sample stands at 55% of the total seats available for opening day. The tracker is pausing updates for a few weeks, and said the next question is whether the film claims the top spot ever for advanced sales.
These are one tracker’s sample figures rather than official studio data, so they should be read as a strong signal rather than a final tally.
Mexico is an interesting market to watch. The film opens there on December 17, a day before its United States release. Presales began on September 28, initially limited to theaters with Infinity Vision certification at chains Cinépolis and Cinemex.
Early on, some cinema websites and apps struggled with errors during the first hours of the sale. That alone says something about demand.
Infinity Vision is Disney’s new premium large-format certification, introduced after Warner Bros. locked IMAX screens for ‘Dune: Part Three’ for three weeks over the holiday season. Disney first used it for a re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, billed as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’.
In the United States, the program covered 1,000 non-IMAX premium screens at launch. According to reports, more than 70% of early sales went to Infinity Vision, so the brand appears to be working.

The Mexico tracker’s numbers echo what has been seen in the United States. ‘Doomsday’ reportedly brought in $16.5 million in its first 24 hours of premium-format presales, roughly double the first-day figure for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.
It later became the first film to pass $40 million in domestic presales, and trackers have compared its pace favorably with ‘Brand New Day’. One analysis said ‘Doomsday’ on its Friday was running about where ‘Brand New Day’ stood 12 days before release.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reunites a huge ensemble, with Robert Downey Jr. as the villain Doctor Doom. The cast includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie and Florence Pugh, among many others.
Anthony and Joe Russo direct, and the film’s runtime has been set at 165 minutes. That places it longer than ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and shorter than ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
Presales are only one early indicator, and opening day numbers will be the real test. Still, a film that reportedly outpaces the entire presale cycle of several recent Marvel hits is hard to ignore.
The next few weeks should bring more data, and the tracker’s promised update could show whether ‘Doomsday’ really is on course to top advanced sales records.
