Marvel has spent months drip-feeding fans new ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ promo art, and the pace has picked up as the December release gets closer. The latest wave is turning an already enormous ensemble into a series of character-by-character spotlights.

Over the weekend, Marvel released a new one-sheet following the film’s premiere at Comic-Con Málaga, flanking Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom with three masked Latverian Witches. Fans have been speculating about who is under the masks, with the online guessing game naming Wanda Maximoff, Clea and Sylvie as possibilities.

On October 4, new promo art spotlighted Sue Storm, Black Panther, Mystique and Yelena Belova, along with other pieces featuring the Fantastic Four, X-Men and Avengers. Fans have been pairing and re-pairing characters on social media ever since, and now there’s another matchup to examine.

MCU Film News shared the latest promo on October 5, putting John Walker and Johnny Storm side by side. The art is split into two glowing panels, with a gold one for Walker marked with an Avengers ‘A’ and a blue one for the Human Torch marked with the Fantastic Four ‘4,’ under the words “Heroes Assemble.”

Walker stands in his red, white and black U.S. Agent suit, wearing a beret and bearded, with a shield at his side. Johnny Storm bursts out of the other panel mid-leap in a blue Fantastic Four jacket, wrapped in flames.

The design is a neat visual summary of the movie’s concept. Characters from different corners of the franchise are being lined up in a single frame, and the pairing is also a fun in-joke for fans who know the actors.

Wyatt Russell plays Walker, who was chosen by the U.S. government to replace Steve Rogers as Captain America in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ but lost the mantle after killing a member of the Flag Smashers. He later joined the team introduced as the Thunderbolts in ‘Thunderbolts*,’ which has since been rebranded as part of the New Avengers.

Russell has previously told The Hollywood Reporter that his Walker has changed dramatically between projects and that he expects a markedly different version again in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ That sets up an interesting contrast for the character, who is competitive and eager to prove himself.

Joseph Quinn plays Johnny Storm, the hot-headed younger brother of Sue Storm who can engulf his body in flames, fly and project fire. He’s one of four Fantastic Four leads in the film, alongside Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Russell and Quinn have worked together before, appearing in the film ‘Overlord.’

The scale of the movie is part of why the promos matter. Marvel has announced 31 characters for the film, and directors Joe and Anthony Russo have said even more characters are appearing, possibly including the Hulk.

The ensemble includes returning Avengers, the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, Wakanda and Talokan characters, and X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer. All of them are colliding around Downey’s Doctor Doom.

Character-focused promos like this one are a smart way to give everyone a moment. With so many heroes on the bill, a pairing of two fan-favorite characters from different franchises helps audiences see the crossover in a single image.

The Russos return to direct after helming ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18.

If the last few days are any guide, the promotional push is far from over. Expect more split-panel and character-pair art, more speculation about the Witches, and plenty of debate over which unannounced heroes might show up.

For now, the pairing of a flag-wearing antihero and a fire-powered Fantastic Four member is another reminder of how many different genres this movie is trying to combine.

Which “Avengers: Doomsday” pairing are you most excited to see?
