‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Smashes Global Pre-Sales Records With Historic International Starts

Marvel Studios has spent the better part of this year trying to prove that the MCU can still command event-level excitement. Few films carry that burden like ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which reunites a giant ensemble under the Russo brothers, with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and Chris Evans back as Steve Rogers.

Disney decided to test that excitement unusually early. Premium-format tickets went on sale on July 20, months ahead of the norm, and general advance sales opened roughly 4 months before release, while a film like ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ began selling tickets only 45 days out.

Now the early gamble looks like it is paying off on a global scale. Global Box Office reported on October 6 that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has crossed the $100M mark in presales at the worldwide box office, following overseas presales that set new records, including the fastest film to pass $1M in pre-release sales in both Brazil and the U.K.

The worldwide figure is the latest in a string of presale milestones. Premium-format sales earned $16.5M in the first 24 hours from about 1,000 theaters, and ‘Doomsday’ later became the first film to pass $40M in domestic presales with roughly 100 days to go. ‘Brand New Day,’ by comparison, did not cross that line until about 40 days before release.

In September, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston announced at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference that domestic presales had passed $50M, with more than 70% going to Infinity Vision, Disney’s new premium large-format brand. Global Box Office later reported the domestic total crossing $55M.

The overseas numbers are what make the new milestone stand out. Brazil and the U.K. are both traditionally strong Marvel markets, and the fact that ‘Doomsday’ became the fastest film to reach $1M in pre-release sales in both is a sign that demand is not limited to North America.

In the U.K., fan-site reports claimed the film passed $1M in presales within 24 hours, which would be the country’s highest first-day presale total in 5 years. Those fan-site claims should be treated with some caution, but the broader pattern is hard to ignore. The film opens in U.K. theaters on December 16, 2 days ahead of its December 18 release in the U.S.

Elsewhere, Bulgarian box office tracker Simionski reported that ‘Doomsday’ was matching the presale pace of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ at the 10-day mark and leaving ‘Dune: Part Three’ far behind. The 2 films share a December 18 release date, and ‘Dune: Part Three’ has IMAX exclusivity in the U.S. for the first 3 weeks.

Context matters, because presales do not guarantee a final box office total. In the domestic market, ‘Doomsday’ sits ahead of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which sold $40M in advance tickets, but behind ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which sold $60M, and record-holder ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which reached $72M.

Still, the early pace has some trackers dreaming big. World of Reel has suggested the film could be tracking toward a $1 billion global opening, and the site reports a budget approaching $400M, which would put the break-even point at roughly $1 billion. Whether the film reaches that territory remains to be seen, but ‘Avengers: Endgame’ still holds the title of Marvel’s highest-grossing film ever with $2.79 billion worldwide.

For a studio that has dealt with uneven releases and rising costs, a global presales record is exactly the kind of headline Marvel wanted. It suggests that the multi-universe collision of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been marketed effectively, with the Russo brothers back at the helm for a film running 165 minutes.

The real test, of course, comes in December. Strong advance sales are a good sign, but they still have to translate into opening weekend ticket sales and, more importantly, word of mouth. For now, Doctor Doom appears to be doing exactly what Marvel hoped he would.

Do you think Avengers: Doomsday can live up to its record-breaking presales?
