Marvel’s D23 presence this year carried a weight that went beyond the usual trailer drops and cast reveals. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ closing in on its December release, the studio used the event to make one of its clearest statements yet about how it’s handling the transition between its founding era of stars and the next generation stepping into the spotlight.

That statement came together on the Honda Center stage during the Disney Entertainment Showcase, where Kevin Feige brought out three names synonymous with the MCU’s earliest days. What happened once the cameras stopped rolling turned out to be just as notable as what happened while they were on.

Avengers: Doomsday‘ stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell were seen backstage together at D23. The trio had just wrapped their onstage segment, where Feige unveiled a special look at the film alongside a new poster, with Downey returning not as Tony Stark but as Victor von Doom, and Evans and Atwell reprising Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter respectively.

The onstage reunion carried plenty of emotional weight given the characters’ history. Atwell noted that the audience loves nothing more than a happy ending, while Evans recalled how close Steve Rogers came to getting exactly that at the close of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ quipping that “we should’ve known better” before the trio teased the new footage centered on Doctor Doom’s looming threat.

That same warmth carried over once the group stepped away from the spotlight. Evans and Downey were also captured backstage greeting the newly announced ‘X-Men’ reboot cast, with one of the veteran actors telling the incoming performers “Welcome aboard,” a gesture that placed two of the actors most responsible for launching the modern MCU directly alongside the cast now tasked with carrying one of Marvel’s most beloved franchises forward.

Downey’s introduction during the panel itself carried its own pointed framing, with the actor presented not as the star who helped build the franchise, but as the man who might now bring a chapter of it to a close. That contrast underscored just how different this version of Downey’s MCU presence is from the one fans spent over a decade watching as Iron Man.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together heroes from across three distinct corners of Marvel’s multiverse, spanning the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. The ensemble cast confirmed for the film includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, and Sebastian Stan, among many others, with Anthony and Joe Russo returning to direct.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to open in theaters December 18 and tickets already on sale, moments like this backstage exchange are giving fans plenty to read into ahead of the film’s release. Whether or not the gesture hints at anything within the story itself, it offered a genuinely warm glimpse of Marvel’s old guard passing the torch to its next wave of stars, right as the studio prepares for one of its biggest theatrical events yet.
