‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Trailer Breaks Viewing Records in Just Three Hours, Leaving Deadpool & Wolverine in the Dust
Marvel Studios has spent the better part of a year building anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ rolling out character-focused teasers for Steve Rogers, Thor, the X-Men, and the Wakandans before finally dropping the full trailer this week. Fans had been begging for the CinemaCon footage to go public since April, and the wait clearly paid off in a big way.
The ensemble alone was enough to send the internet into a frenzy. Robert Downey Jr. steps into the role of Doctor Doom, facing off against a combined roster that includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, and Florence Pugh, alongside returning X-Men veterans like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Rebecca Romijn.
Now the numbers are in, and they are staggering. The first full trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ crossed 300 million views in just 8 hours, making it the second fastest trailer in history to hit that milestone.
That kind of speed puts it in rare company. For comparison, the trailer for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ needed a full 24 hours to reach 360 million views, and that total was padded by more than 100 million people who caught it during its Super Bowl airing. Doomsday hit its number organically, without a televised sporting event boosting the count.
It is not the only benchmark ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has cleared this year. The four character teasers that preceded the full trailer racked up a combined 1.02 billion views, a figure reported by The Hollywood Reporter that outpaced Marvel’s previous trailer launches on both Instagram and TikTok. Those teasers also generated well over a dozen organic trending topics on X, with Doomsday, Steve Rogers, and Thor all cracking the list.
For context, ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ pulled in 202 million views in its first 24 hours last year, a number tied to a major media event featuring its cast. Doomsday blowing past those figures without a similar built-in boost says a lot about where fan enthusiasm currently sits heading into the film’s December release.
The trailer itself gives fans plenty to chew on. It shows Doctor Doom preparing to wage a multiverse-spanning war on Earth’s heroes, while Thor reunites with Chris Evans’ Captain America for the first time since ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Fox’s X-Men characters, including Professor Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, and Cyclops, officially step into the Avengers’ universe alongside holdovers from the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts.
Will Avengers: Doomsday become Marvel Studios' biggest movie ever?
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has reportedly been targeting a runtime of around 165 minutes, which would place it second only to ‘Endgame’ among the longest Marvel Studios productions. Balancing a cast this massive across multiple franchises appears to have made the editing process a genuine challenge, though the studio has stayed firm on the film’s December 18 release date.
The trailer’s performance arrives at a notable moment for the franchise, following a stretch where several MCU releases underperformed at the box office. A number this large, generated purely through organic interest rather than a broadcast event, suggests fans are more locked in than the last few years might have indicated.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ now less than five months away, and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ waiting in the wings for the following year, Marvel appears to be building toward its biggest crossover event since ‘Endgame’ first closed out the Infinity Saga. Whether the film itself can live up to a trailer rollout this dominant remains the big question on everyone’s mind.
