‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Universe Experience Lands in France With a Throne for Doom and Ruins for the Avengers

Marvel isn’t waiting for December to bring Doctor Doom into the real world. Over the past few months, the studio has turned shopping malls, expos and pop-up shops into mini movie sets, each one designed to be photographed and shared. The marketing push has been unusually aggressive, and it has just reached France.

The latest stop is a first look at the ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ universe experience in France. The photos show 2 sets inside a bright, glass-domed shopping center: a battle-scarred display of Avengers wreckage on one side and a stepped throne for Doom on the other.

The Avengers set is the more dramatic of the 2. Crumbled stone blocks are lit with glowing green cracks, with Captain America’s shield propped among the rubble and a carved Avengers logo on the wall. Next to it, a tall throne sits on a raised platform in front of dark green panels, beneath an ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ sign, with a geometric mosaic spread across the floor.

Details on the experience are still limited. One shopping center, Atlantis in Saint-Herblain, is running an ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ event from October 21 to October 31 in collaboration with Marvel France. Whether the photos come from that location is not confirmed.

That event promises an immersive experience across several spaces and activities inspired by the Avengers, timed for the school holidays. Highlights include play tables with Marvel figures and toys, a digital memory game featuring characters from the film, a display of collectible pieces and a Marvel pop-up store.

France is only the latest country to get a taste. In Shanghai, Marvel took over the BilibiliWorld event with 5 elaborate sets, including Doom’s throne, the X-Mansion, Avengers Headquarters, the Baxter Building and Wakanda. A release-day countdown clock hung above Doom’s seat.

A full-scale replica of the throne also appeared inside a mall in the Philippines, complete with an illuminated Avengers logo and a live countdown. Another countdown booth in China, topped with a sculpted wave, has fans speculating about Talokan.

The throne has emerged as the campaign’s signature piece. Promo art shows Doom in armor and a hood, seated atop a towering stone throne at the top of a wide staircase, and the Comic-Con trailer reportedly opened with him seated in Latveria. All of that points to the throne room being a central location in the film.

Not everyone is sold on the design. Some fans have complained that it doesn’t look medieval enough for a ruler of Latveria. Still, it keeps showing up in displays, standees and promotional posters, and the French version is the latest proof that it’s the franchise’s new centerpiece.

Marvel’s real-world promotion hasn’t always won over fans. When the Russo brothers teased a surprise in London this June, fans hoping for a trailer got a Doom-themed coffee pop-up instead. Reaction was loud, with some fans joking that they had been beaten by caffeine.

Things have improved since then. Marvel has since released a full trailer, which reportedly passed 503 million views, and unveiled a special look at D23. Physical displays like the French sets give fans a more tangible way to take part in the build-up.

French audiences won’t have to wait as long as most of the world. Cinema listings put the film’s release in France on December 16, 2 days ahead of the December 18 US date. Paris’s Le Grand Rex is already offering overnight Infinity Vision screenings starting at 12:01 a.m. on December 16, and the first of them is sold out.

Listings put the runtime at about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Dolby Cinema screenings in France will also include several minutes of exclusive footage, giving fans another reason to seek out premium formats.

With less than 2 months to go, expect more installations like this to appear in other cities. The film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, follows heroes from 3 universes on a collision course with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and it leads into ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

If the French displays are any indication, Marvel is determined to make Doom’s arrival feel like a physical event.
