The countdown to ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has fans combing through every scrap of information they can find, and cast interviews have become a minefield of potential spoilers. With Robert Downey Jr. stepping into the role of Doctor Doom after years as Tony Stark, every hint about how these two identities might intersect on screen has taken on outsized importance.

David Harbour, reprising his role as Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian, has proven especially chatty about his upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe return. The actor has spent recent press tours dropping small but tantalizing details about what audiences can expect from the sprawling ensemble film, due in theaters this December.

Now Harbour has offered his most direct tease yet. Asked to recite a line from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ completely out of context, the actor slipped into character, delivering a deadpan, Russian-accented reply: “You… are Tony Stark.”

The moment came from a wide-ranging conversation Harbour gave to Variety, in which he was pressed for any detail about the next MCU installment and asked to recite a line from the movie. He offered the line while pointing, staying fully in Alexei’s deadpan register, a delivery style that’s become something of a signature for the character across his appearances in ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Thunderbolts*.’

Taken at face value, the line suggests that Red Guardian may be one of the characters who comes face to face with Doom and immediately clocks his resemblance to the fallen Avenger. That would mark a significant narrative beat, given how carefully Marvel has guarded the relationship between Victor Von Doom and Tony Stark’s legacy since Downey’s casting was first revealed.

Fan speculation about a Stark-Doom connection has simmered for well over a year. Much of that theorizing centered on whether Doom might simply be a multiversal variant of Stark, though that idea has reportedly been walked back by those close to the production, with Doom instead confirmed as the true Victor Von Doom rather than a Stark stand-in.

Still, Harbour’s line does little to settle the debate on its own. It’s entirely possible the moment is a knowing wink rather than a literal plot reveal, especially given Harbour’s history of playful misdirection when pressed by journalists for spoilers. Red Guardian, notably, doesn’t share history with Stark the way original Avengers like Steve Rogers or Bruce Banner do, which makes his reaction line all the more intriguing if it does make the final cut.

Harbour’s tease arrives alongside a steady drip of casting confirmations for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ The film brings back a sprawling roster of MCU veterans, including Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, alongside Harbour’s fellow “New Avengers” like Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman.

The film also folds in major legacy characters, with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Rebecca Romijn returning as X-Men mainstays, and Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach representing the Fantastic Four. That scale has made ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ one of the most anticipated crossover events in the franchise’s history, with Downey Jr.’s dual legacy as both Stark and Doom sitting at its center.

Harbour has previously teased other details from the production without giving away specifics, describing shooting a sequence alongside Pugh that captured a beloved Marvel character performing an iconic, long-awaited moment. He’s kept coy about exactly which scene that was, but the comment underscored just how much nostalgia and payoff this film is expected to deliver for longtime fans.

Whether “You… are Tony Stark” ends up as a throwaway gag or a genuine story beat remains to be seen. Either way, it’s the kind of loose-lipped tease that keeps the internet buzzing in the months before a major Marvel release, and Harbour seems more than happy to keep feeding the speculation machine.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters this December, closing out the Multiverse Saga with what promises to be one of the MCU’s biggest ensemble outings yet.
