‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Just Shattered a Box Office Record That Stood for Over a Decade

Marvel’s decision to send ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ back into theaters was always going to attract attention, but nobody quite expected the rerelease to start breaking records before a single new frame had even played for audiences. What was pitched as a nostalgic bridge to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has quickly turned into one of the more surprising box office stories of the year.

Tickets for ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ went on sale Tuesday, August 25, giving fans their first opportunity to lock in seats ahead of the film’s September return. The rerelease promises more than a straight replay of the 2019 original, arriving with new footage designed to connect directly into ‘Doomsday’s’ story.

That anticipation translated into numbers almost immediately. Within just a few hours of tickets going live, ‘Endgame Encore’ had reached the biggest first-day pre-sales this century for any theatrical rerelease, surpassing the mark previously held by the 2012 ‘Titanic’ 3D rerelease, a record that had stood for 14 years.

The overall domestic record for a rerelease still belongs to the 1997 ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ rerelease, which brought in $138 million total during its run. Whether ‘Endgame Encore’ can eventually challenge that number remains to be seen, but breaking a 14-year-old benchmark within hours of tickets becoming available suggests the demand is there to make a real push.

Part of what’s fueling that demand is the promise of new material. ‘Endgame Encore’ is listed with a runtime of 185 minutes, four minutes longer than the original 2019 cut, and reports indicate the added footage is designed to build a direct narrative bridge into ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Marvel has kept the specifics of those new scenes under wraps, fueling plenty of fan speculation about what audiences will actually see.

There’s also a bigger number potentially in play. ‘Endgame’s’ original theatrical run earned $2.799 billion worldwide, placing it just behind ‘Avatar’s’ $2.923 billion as the second-highest-grossing film of all time, a gap of roughly $124 million. With presales already breaking records, there’s a real possibility ‘Endgame Encore’ could close that gap and reclaim the top spot on the all-time global chart, something the film briefly held before ‘Avatar’ surged back ahead of it years ago.

Reaching a full $3 billion globally remains a much bigger stretch, but the strength of this opening presale run has at least put that conversation back on the table in a way few expected for a seven-year-old film. For context, ‘Endgame’ already broke box office history once before, surpassing ‘Titanic’s’ worldwide haul just two weekends into its original 2019 release, a moment ‘Titanic’ director James Cameron himself publicly congratulated Marvel for at the time.

Whether ‘Endgame Encore’ can sustain this pace through its September 25 release and beyond will depend heavily on how wide the film’s theatrical footprint ends up being, along with how much additional interest the new ‘Doomsday’-connected footage generates once the details become public. Early indications suggest Marvel has tapped back into exactly the kind of nostalgia that made ‘Endgame’ a cultural phenomenon in the first place.

For a franchise gearing up for its biggest crossover event since 2019, breaking presale records before the movie even opens is about as strong a signal as Marvel could ask for.
