Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Presales Keep Box Office Trackers Bullish Heading Into Opening Weekend

Re-releases usually get a polite nostalgia bump before fading quickly, but ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore‘ has spent weeks behaving like a brand-new tentpole. The presales for Marvel’s return to its 2019 blockbuster have been strong enough to make analysts rethink what a catalogue title can do.

Tickets went on sale in August, and one report says the film shattered the biggest first-day presales record for any theatrical re-release, surpassing a mark held by Titanic’s 2012 3D re-release for fourteen years. Marvel’s trailer also pulled 77 million views in its first 24 hours, according to Deadline.

Now, with opening day here, tracker TheFlatLannister has posted a fresh update on the Box Office Theory forums that quickly circulated on r/boxoffice. The tracker still expects a $25 million-plus weekend, with no change from the previous day. The tracker also describes the MTC3 comp as very strong, staying ahead of the MTC2 comp on Friday in raw tickets and well ahead in dollars.

There is one more encouraging detail. Sunday sales at MTC3 are already ahead of Thursday in raw tickets, which points to a healthy trend across the whole weekend rather than a burst of front-loaded fan demand.

The wider tracking picture lines up with that optimism. Variety has the film tracking for $25 million to $28 million over the weekend, while Murphy’s Multiverse projects $22 million to $27 million domestically. TheWrap reported that independent trackers and exhibition sources see at least $25 million, with a good chance at clearing $30 million.

Box Office Theory is a bit more cautious in its own published forecast, giving a range of $18 million to $27 million and calling the release a fan-driven event. That makes the forum tracker’s $25 million-plus figure look like the optimistic end of the conversation.

The $25 million line matters because of one record. A result near the top of tracking would overtake the 2012 ‘Titanic 3D’ re-release at $25.6 million, the biggest domestic opening weekend for a theatrical re-release.

International presales are helping too. In China, presales for the September 24-27 window reached $965,000 after two days of nationwide sales, ahead of the two-day totals of ‘The Batman’ at $313,000 and ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ at $435,000. Some trackers are now pointing to a global opening north of $50 million.

India also looks strong. Pinkvilla reported roughly 35,000 tickets sold for opening day in the national chains PVR Inox and Cinepolis, though it stressed that its figures are subjective trade estimates. In Indonesia, where the film opened early on September 23, Cinepoint reported 131,692 admissions across 2,108 showtimes on day one, enough to return the country’s overall admissions record to ‘Avengers: Endgame’ over the local hit ‘Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!’.

The larger question is whether the rerun can retake the all-time crown. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ sits at $2,799.4 million worldwide against ‘Avatar’ at $2,923.7 million, a gap of $124.3 million. Even a strong domestic haul of $25 million to $28 million leaves it roughly $96 million to $99 million short, so international audiences will have to carry most of the load.

Marvel also has plenty riding on the goodwill. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has passed ‘Endgame’ on the all-time domestic chart at $858.4 million to take the No. 2 spot. The re-release adds an exclusive look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which arrives in theaters December 18, and ‘Doomsday’ has already racked up more than $50 million in presales.

Not everything is guaranteed, though. Presale enthusiasm doesn’t always translate directly into final grosses once opening weekend arrives, and Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ is targeting $24 million to $26 million in its second outing after a $60.2 million opening.
