‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Rerelease Comes in 5 Different Theater Formats, and Here’s What Each One Offers
Marvel Studios has never been shy about turning nostalgia into a marketing event, and this fall the studio is leaning into that strategy in a big way. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ still months away, the studio is using one of its biggest hits ever to build anticipation, and the rollout plan is more elaborate than a typical theatrical re-release.
That anticipation centers on ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the record-breaking 2019 blockbuster that closed out the Infinity Saga and grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide. Rather than simply putting the film back in theaters as-is, Marvel has retooled the presentation entirely, giving longtime fans new reasons to buy a ticket even if they’ve already seen the film dozens of times.
That reworked presentation is called ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ and it’s set to hit theaters on September 25 in five distinct formats: Standard, Infinity Vision, IMAX, ScreenX, and 4DX. Each version offers a different way to experience the film, giving audiences a real choice in how immersive, or how enhanced, they want their return trip to Endgame’s climactic battle to be.
Infinity Vision is a brand-new certification Disney introduced for premium large-format theaters, guaranteeing big screens, bright images and top-tier sound quality. It’s the first release under this new program, and theaters had to meet a strict set of technical standards, including screen size and projection requirements, in order to qualify for the certification.
Both the IMAX and Infinity Vision versions come with an added incentive beyond format quality. Audiences who catch the Encore presentation on either of those certified screens will also get an exclusive look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the Russo brothers’ upcoming sequel arriving in theaters on December 18. That footage, along with a custom introduction and a special end tag, is reportedly exclusive to those two formats and won’t appear in standard theatrical screenings.
The IMAX rollout carries some added significance given the situation surrounding ‘Doomsday’ itself. With Warner Bros. and Legendary having secured an exclusivity deal locking ‘Dune: Part Three’ into IMAX screens for three weeks, ‘Doomsday’ is expected to open without an IMAX presence in the U.S. during that window. ‘Endgame Encore,’ by contrast, faces no such restriction, giving fans full access to IMAX screens for a limited run.
For audiences chasing a more immersive spectacle, ScreenX projects the film across the side walls of the auditorium, creating a 270-degree panoramic viewing experience meant to fill the viewer’s peripheral vision. Since ‘Endgame’ wasn’t originally shot with ScreenX in mind, certain scenes will reportedly be extended using CGI or archival footage to fill out the expanded frame.
4DX takes a different approach entirely, using motion seats that shift, vibrate and react in sync with on-screen action, essentially turning the theater into a stationary ride. Both ScreenX and 4DX screenings will include the new post-credits material as long as they’re shown inside an Infinity Vision-certified theater, meaning fans don’t have to sacrifice the bonus footage just because they want the more theatrical formats.
Standard theaters round out the fifth option, offering audiences the straightforward theatrical experience without the added technical bells and whistles, though it remains unclear whether that version includes any of the new footage found in the premium formats.
The timing of the re-release is clearly no accident. Landing roughly twelve weeks ahead of ‘Doomsday’s’ December premiere, ‘Endgame Encore’ functions as both a nostalgia play and a promotional runway for Marvel’s next major ensemble film. It’s also a chance for fans who missed ‘Endgame’ in theaters back in 2019, or who never got to see it in IMAX, to catch it on the big screen once again before the next chapter begins.
With five ways to watch and a first look at ‘Doomsday’ baked into the premium options, Marvel is clearly betting that fans will show up more than once.
