Backlash Grows After Shia Labeouf Allegedly Made Homophobic Remarks Pre-Arrest
Shia LaBeouf is facing fresh controversy following his recent arrest during Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans. The 39-year-old actor was taken into custody early on Wednesday, February 18, after an incident at R Bar in the Marigny neighborhood.
Authorities say LaBeouf became aggressive when a bar manager tried to escort him out. Police documents claim that the situation escalated once he was outside the venue.
Court filings state that LaBeouf allegedly punched a man named Jeffrey Damnit in the upper body and then struck another individual, Nathan Thomas Reed, in the nose. He was booked on two counts of simple battery and released on his own recognizance the following afternoon.
The case has drawn more attention because both alleged victims claim LaBeouf used homophobic slurs during the altercation. Damnit, who was dressed in drag at the time, alleged that LaBeouf screamed, “You’re a fing f*t,”* while trying to strike him.
Cellphone footage reportedly shows LaBeouf using the same slur while in the back of a police vehicle. Reed, who identifies as queer, supported Damnit’s account and said he wanted it known that LaBeouf was calling them f**t.
An initial police report reportedly included a statement from LaBeouf saying, “These f*****s put me in jail,” though that detail did not appear in later court documents. A police spokesperson confirmed the matter remains under investigation and will need to be resolved in court.
Despite the serious allegations, LaBeouf appeared unconcerned immediately after his release. He was seen on Bourbon Street wearing Mardi Gras beads and told a local reporter, “Mardi Gras is amazing.” Later, he posted a short message on social media that read simply, “Free me.” His next court date is scheduled for March 19 in New Orleans.
This incident comes as LaBeouf continues efforts to rebuild his career. He recently starred in the boxing drama Salvable, released in May 2025, where he played a street boxer named Vince. He also appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious film Megalopolis, adding to his diverse body of work.
LaBeouf has been open about his personal journey, including his recent conversion to Catholicism, which he says has given him a sense of peace. However, his public image remains affected by a 2020 lawsuit from former partner FKA Twigs, involving allegations of abuse that are still in the legal system.
LaBeouf remains a figure of public fascination, known as much for his professional achievements as for his controversial moments. Fans and critics alike continue to watch how he navigates both legal troubles and career opportunities.
