Few blockbusters felt as inevitable as a follow-up to a movie that grossed more than $1.4 billion worldwide and picked up eight Academy Award nominations along the way. When ‘Barbie‘ became a cultural phenomenon back in 2023, a sequel felt less like a possibility and more like an eventual certainty for Warner Bros.

That certainty has spent the past several months quietly unraveling behind closed doors. Reports first surfaced from The New York Times revealing that talks between the studio and the film’s core creative team had stalled, largely over compensation terms that Warner Bros. Discovery leadership wasn’t willing to approve.

Now, according to a new report from Variety, the situation has escalated into something far more serious. The outlet reports that Warner Bros. has made more than six separate offers to the ‘Barbie’ creative team over the past three years, and every single one has been rejected, leaving the studio with just four months left to put a sequel into active development before the film rights revert entirely to Mattel.

‘Barbie 2’ Talks Collapse as Warner Bros. and Ryan Gosling Reportedly Can’t Close the Deal

At the center of the standoff is a profit-participation structure tied to box office milestones, one that director Greta Gerwig, star and producer Margot Robbie, and co-star Ryan Gosling are pushing for as part of any new deal. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has reportedly declined to approve those terms, viewing the proposed arrangement as too generous, though a studio spokesperson disputed that framing, noting that talent representatives turned down an offer made back in May and have yet to submit a counteroffer of their own.

The stakes tied to that deadline are significant. Because the original ‘Barbie’ cast and crew only signed on for a single film rather than a standard sequel-obligation clause, Warner Bros. has no contractual leverage forcing anyone back for a follow-up, leaving the studio entirely dependent on reaching new terms everyone can agree to.

Gosling, who earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his performance as Ken, is reportedly seeking a salary increase to $20 million as part of any new agreement. If Warner Bros. and Mattel can’t finalize deals with Gerwig, Robbie, and Gosling before the rights revert, Mattel would be forced to rebuild the franchise entirely from scratch, meaning a new filmmaker, a new cast, and an entirely new creative direction with no connection to the 2023 original.

Notably, Gerwig and her longtime writing and directing partner Noah Baumbach reportedly already have an idea in mind for the sequel and are prepared to begin writing as soon as contracts are finalized. Until that happens, though, the pair is reportedly withholding the concept from the studio entirely.

Warner Bros. co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca addressed the standoff directly in a joint statement, saying the studio has a rights deal with Mattel in place and has made a series of substantial offers to try finalizing a deal for the next ‘Barbie’ film, while acknowledging that an agreement has not yet been reached.

The timing adds extra pressure given Warner Bros.’ broader box office struggles this year, following disappointing results for both ‘Supergirl’ and ‘The Bride.’ Missing the Mattel deadline on a franchise as valuable as ‘Barbie’ would mark yet another high-profile stumble for a studio already facing scrutiny over recent decision-making, including the shelving of ‘Coyote vs. Acme.’

With just months remaining before the rights potentially shift back to Mattel, all eyes are on whether Warner Bros. can close a deal that has already survived three years of failed negotiations

Will Warner Bros. manage to secure the 'Barbie' sequel before the rights deadline?
