Superhero movie news usually revolves around castings, release dates and flashy set photos, but sometimes the biggest story is what isn’t happening at all. For DC Studios’ next live-action Batman film, that’s exactly the situation fans currently find themselves watching unfold.

“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” Andy Muschietti’s take on Bruce Wayne’s story within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, has spent months sitting in a strange kind of creative limbo. Despite being officially announced years ago, the project has shown few visible signs of forward momentum compared to other titles across DC’s growing slate.

According to recent reports, all work on the film has reportedly been paused entirely until Warner Bros. Discovery’s ongoing merger with Paramount Skydance is fully settled. That timing lines up with a broader pattern of uncertainty surrounding several Warner Bros. projects as the massive corporate deal continues working its way through the approval process.

The delay comes despite Muschietti remaining officially attached to direct, alongside his sister and longtime producing partner Barbara Muschietti through their Double Dream banner. The film is based on Grant Morrison’s comic run of the same name, which introduced the “Bat-family” dynamic where Bruce Wayne’s biological son, Damian, serves as Robin alongside his father, marking Robin’s first live-action film appearance since Chris O’Donnell’s turn in 1997’s “Batman and Robin.”

Muschietti’s attention has visibly shifted toward other Warner Bros. projects in recent months, further fueling speculation about “Brave and the Bold’s” uncertain timeline. He’s currently deep into work on “It: Welcome to Derry” Season 2, the HBO prequel series continuing Stephen King’s Pennywise mythology, with the new season reportedly set in 1935.

That continued investment in “Welcome to Derry” has raised obvious questions among fans about where “Brave and the Bold” actually ranks in terms of priority within DC’s broader film slate. If the Batman project were truly racing toward production, Muschietti moving deeper into another major franchise commitment would represent an unusual scheduling choice.

Gunn himself has previously acknowledged that “Brave and the Bold” isn’t currently racing toward production, a comment that lines up with reports suggesting the film remains without a confirmed release date. Current estimates place the earliest possible release no sooner than 2028, putting it on a similar timeline to Gunn’s own “Man of Tomorrow” Superman sequel.

The uncertainty surrounding “Brave and the Bold” ties directly back to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders recently backing a proposed 110 billion dollar merger with Paramount Skydance, following a lengthy bidding war in which Paramount ultimately beat out Netflix for the acquisition. That kind of ownership change carries significant weight for any studio division, and DC Studios is no exception.

Discovery, industry observers widely expect a comprehensive review of DC’s current slate, potentially affecting everything from release schedules to the creative direction Gunn and Safran have established since taking over as co-CEOs. Given that level of corporate uncertainty, pausing major creative decisions on a project without a confirmed release date makes practical business sense, even if it leaves fans frustrated by the lack of visible progress.

For a studio that’s spent the past few years carefully rebuilding its cinematic universe from the ground up, this kind of merger-driven pause represents exactly the sort of external disruption executives like Gunn have had to navigate while trying to maintain creative continuity. Until Warner Bros.
