‘Beef’ Stars Reportedly Eyed for Major X-Men Roles in the MCU

Casting speculation has become something of a full-time sport for Marvel fans over the past year, especially when it comes to the studio’s long-gestating X-Men reboot. Every insider account with a decent track record has become required reading, and theories about who might suit up as which mutant have snowballed into a genuine cultural moment.

That speculation reached a new fever pitch this week with a fresh wave of reported casting news. According to industry chatter, two names have finally attached themselves to two of the franchise’s most iconic characters, giving fans their clearest picture yet of what Marvel’s mutant lineup might actually look like.

Charles Melton is reportedly set to play Beast, while Cailee Spaeny is reportedly attached to play Rogue in Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot. The claims originated from the X account @ApocHorseman, an insider whose previous Marvel-related reports have generally proven accurate, though it’s worth stressing that Marvel Studios has not confirmed either casting.

Melton, known for his acclaimed turn in ‘May December’ and his upcoming role in the second season of ‘Beef,’ has previously been coy but clearly interested when asked about the possibility of joining the reboot. Speaking with ComicBookMovie about a potential reunion with ‘Beef’ collaborator Jake Schreier, who is directing the X-Men film, Melton said, “Absolutely. It does interest me for sure. Oh, yeah. That would be cool. What a dream. What a dream.”

Spaeny, meanwhile, first drew wider attention for her breakout role in ‘Priscilla’ before appearing in ‘Alien: Romulus.’ Reports have described her as the top choice of both Marvel Studios and Schreier for the role of Rogue, edging out other names previously floated for the part, including Odessa A’Zion, Margaret Qualley, and Inde Navarrette.

Neither casting exists in a vacuum. The same wave of reporting has also linked Adam Driver to the villain Mister Sinister, though Marvel president Kevin Feige has already pushed back on that particular rumor, confirming Driver was approached for a Marvel role but has so far turned the studio down, joking that reaching out to the actor has become something of a running tradition that never quite pans out. That denial alone underscores just how much of this casting picture remains unofficial and fluid.

Marvel has been notoriously tight-lipped about the entire project, which is being written by Joanna Calo and Lee Sung Jin and directed by Schreier following his work on ‘Thunderbolts*.’ Despite widespread expectation that a cast reveal would headline this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the studio’s Hall H panel came and went without any X-Men casting confirmation, focusing instead on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and surprise reveals like Ryan Gosling’s casting as Ghost Rider.

That silence has only intensified speculation that Marvel is saving its X-Men announcement for Disney’s D23 Expo, scheduled for August 14 through 16 in Anaheim. Schreier himself has previously acknowledged that casting talks are underway, while cautioning fans directly not to treat every online rumor as confirmed fact.

Melton and Spaeny aren’t the only names swirling around the project either. Reports have also linked Cooper Hoffman to Cyclops, Sadie Sink to Jean Grey, and Bill Skarsgård to Professor X, though none of those castings have been confirmed by the studio any more than Beast or Rogue have. The sheer volume of credible-sounding names circulating at once speaks to how tightly Marvel has managed to keep a lid on the project despite months of relentless fan speculation.

The reboot itself is being positioned as a fresh start for the mutant franchise within the MCU, distinct from the Fox-era films that introduced most audiences to characters like Beast and Rogue. Schreier, coming off ‘Thunderbolts*,’ along with writers Joanna Calo and Lee Sung Jin of ‘The Bear’ and ‘Beef’ fame, are reportedly aiming for a character-first approach that leans into emotional stakes before large-scale spectacle.

Until Marvel makes an official statement, names like Melton and Spaeny remain speculation rather than certainty, however credible the sourcing behind them may be.
