That skyline that made jaws drop in every theater on the planet? Built entirely inside a computer. Pixel by pixel, shader by shader, by hundreds of artists whose names scrolled past in the credits while most people were already putting their coats on.
No red carpet. No profile in Variety. Just the work.
That’s the unspoken deal at the heart of modern superhero filmmaking – the more jaw-dropping the visual, the more invisible the people who made it.
So What Actually Goes On Back There?
Most people hear “VFX” and picture one guy in a dark room doing… something. Magic, probably. The reality is messier, more collaborative, and honestly way more interesting.
A production like Avengers: Endgame – which had over 2,500 VFX shots – pulled in teams from ILM, Weta Digital, Digital Domain, and Framestore simultaneously. Each studio ran its own pipeline. Each pipeline had its own specialists. And every single one of those specialists had a specific, narrow job that fed directly into someone else’s specific, narrow job.
It’s less like one artist painting a canvas and more like… assembling a watch. Hundreds of tiny moving parts, each made by a different pair of hands, that only make sense together.

The Tools That Make It Real

Autodesk Maya runs the modeling, rigging, and animation side of things. Industry standard, has been for years. SideFX Houdini handles the procedural chaos stuff: destruction simulations, particle effects, the kind of fluid dynamics that made the water sequences in Aquaman look the way they did. Foundry’s Nuke is where compositors live. And ZBrush is how sculptors add the micro-detail – every crease, every pore, every battle scar – that makes a digital face feel lived in rather than rendered.
Learning these properly takes time. Real time. Not “watch a few YouTube tutorials” time – structured, supervised, deadline-driven time inside something that actually resembles a production environment.

Students training there aren’t just learning software – they’re learning in the city where a massive chunk of the industry actually lives.
Four Seconds of Screen Time. Six Months of Work.
Take the portal scene in Endgame. Every hero stepping through golden rings of light to face Thanos’s army. Probably four, five seconds of screen time. One of the most celebrated shots in recent blockbuster history.
Here’s what went into it, roughly:
Previs first – a rough 3D animatic so the director can plan camera moves and timing before committing to the expensive stuff. Think of it like a sketch before a painting.
Then asset creation – every character, every creature, every environmental piece visible in frame. Modeled. Textured. Rigged.
Then animation – characters posed, moved, given intention. Often with motion capture data as a starting point.
Then FX – the portals themselves, the dust kicked up by armies, the energy blasts. Simulated in Houdini.
Then lighting – virtual lights positioned to match the real plates shot on set. Every shadow has to make physical sense.
Then compositing – all of it layered together in Nuke until the seams disappear.
Four seconds. Sometimes six months of work across dozens of artists. That’s not unusual. That’s Tuesday.
What Studios Actually Want (And It Isn’t Just Talent)
Here’s the thing nobody tells aspiring VFX artists early enough: a gorgeous personal portfolio is not the same as being production-ready.
Studios don’t just need people who can make beautiful things. They need people who can make the right things – assets that meet topology requirements, shots that can be revised when the director changes their mind (and they will), work that integrates cleanly into a pipeline they didn’t build themselves.
Self-taught artists often hit this wall hard. A sculpt can be breathtaking and still fail rigging requirements. A composite can be technically impressive and still be impossible to adjust for a note. The craft is real. The context for the craft – the professional habits, pipeline awareness, deadline discipline – that’s what separates artists who make it from artists who stay on the outside.
It’s the difference between knowing how to cook and knowing how to survive a dinner-rush in a professional kitchen. Related skills. Very different realities.

The credits roll. Most people ignore them. But somewhere in that wall of names are the people who built the world audiences just spent two and a half hours believing in – every building, every creature, every impossible physics event rendered plausible by sheer craft and computational horsepower.
