Ben Affleck has spent decades proving himself as both an actor and a director, earning respect in Hollywood for his versatility and creativity. He first caught attention with roles in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy, before co-writing Good Will Hunting with his lifelong friend Matt Damon.

The screenplay won them an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and launched Affleck into the spotlight. While he started primarily as a leading man, Affleck eventually moved behind the camera.

His 2007 directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, earned critical praise and paved the way for hits like The Town and the Oscar-winning Argo. Over time, he developed a reputation for creating tense, character-driven films with a distinctive style.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Affleck revealed that his greatest inspiration comes from Paul Thomas Anderson. “He knows I really look up to him,” Affleck said, admitting that Anderson is his favorite director of all time.

He shared that he even showed Anderson his own film Air, and while the director called it “just a fun movie,” Affleck said the experience left him questioning whether he had achieved the level of mastery he admires. “Sometimes I feel like an Antonio Salieri around him,” he added, expressing awe at Anderson’s talent.

Despite these moments of self-doubt, Affleck continues to juggle acting and directing with impressive productivity. Earlier this year, he starred in the Netflix crime thriller The Rip, which reunited him with Matt Damon.

The film follows Miami narcotics officers whose loyalties are tested after discovering a major cash seizure and highlights the ongoing success of their collaborative production company, Artists Equity.

Looking ahead, Affleck is directing and starring in the Netflix kidnapping thriller Animals, alongside Gillian Anderson and Kerry Washington. He is also preparing to reprise his role as Christian Wolff in The Accountant 2, currently finishing post-production.

Alongside his professional projects, he remains committed to the Eastern Congo Initiative and other philanthropic work. On a personal level, Affleck is focusing on sobriety and family life following his divorce from Jennifer Lopez in late 2025.

Sources say he is prioritizing his children and surrounding himself with a strong support system as he navigates this new chapter. Affleck’s admiration for Paul Thomas Anderson is clear, but he also continues to carve his own path as one of Hollywood’s most respected talents.
