Ben Affleck’s ‘Animals’ Trailer Drops, and the Kidnapping Thriller Looks Absolutely Ruthless

Ben Affleck has never been shy about tackling morally complicated territory as a filmmaker, and his latest directorial effort looks like it’s pushing that instinct further than ever. After stepping away from directing since 2023’s ‘Air,’ Affleck has spent the past year quietly assembling one of the more stacked ensemble casts of the fall season for his return behind the camera.

That buildup has included a steady stream of casting news, with Gillian Anderson, Kerry Washington, and Steven Yeun all boarding the project throughout the year, alongside Luis Gerardo Méndez and Adriana Paz rounding out the ensemble. The film also marked a rare instance of Affleck taking on writing, directing, and starring duties simultaneously, working from a script he co-wrote with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray.

Now the wait is over. Netflix has released the first full trailer for ‘Animals,’ giving audiences their most detailed look yet at the tense, high-stakes crime thriller ahead of its October 9 release on the streaming platform.

The footage centers on Milo Bradford, an LA mayoral candidate played by Affleck, whose son is kidnapped in the middle of a critical stretch of his campaign. With most of the family’s finances already poured into the race, Milo and his wife are left scrambling to steal the money needed to pay the ransom, a desperate gamble the trailer frames as the beginning of a much darker unraveling.

Kerry Washington plays Milo’s wife in the film, and the trailer leans heavily into the tension between the couple as they’re forced into increasingly dangerous decisions to protect their child. Gillian Anderson appears as a fixer brought in to help manage the fallout, while Steven Yeun rounds out the central trio as Milo’s campaign manager, caught in the middle of both a political crisis and a personal one.

Netflix has described the film as a heart-racing thriller set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, and the trailer backs that framing up, trading flashy action for a slow-burning sense of dread as the Bradfords’ carefully built life begins to fracture. The kidnapping plot doubles as a pressure test not just on the family, but on the campaign and public image Milo has spent years constructing.

Behind the scenes, Affleck reunites with longtime collaborator Matt Damon on the producing side through their Artists Equity banner, alongside producers Brad Weston, Dani Bernfeld, and Collin Creighton. Fifth Season and Makeready also produced, giving the project a robust industry backing to match its cast.

The ensemble is rounded out by Ray Fisher, Matt Gerald, Mark Kassen, and Christopher Woodley, further deepening a cast already loaded with recognizable names. For both Washington and Yeun, ‘Animals’ continues a run of high-profile collaborations with Netflix, adding another prestige project to their recent slates.

With the trailer now out and a firm release date locked in, ‘Animals’ is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most talked-about fall offerings, combining Affleck’s eye for tense, character-driven thrillers with a premise built entirely around impossible choices. Given the caliber of talent both in front of and behind the camera, expectations are running high for what could be one of the more gripping releases of the season.
