Ben McKenzie Says He’d Return for a ‘The O.C.’ Revival Under the Right Circumstances
Nostalgia for early-2000s teen dramas has fueled plenty of revival talk over the years, with fans of that era constantly hoping their favorite shows might get a second life. Few series from that period carry quite the cultural weight that ‘The O.C.’ still holds nearly two decades after it first introduced audiences to the sun-drenched drama of Orange County.
The Fox teen drama ran for four seasons between 2003 and 2007, launching the careers of Adam Brody, Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson while cementing itself as a defining show of its generation. Its cast has occasionally reunited for podcasts and interviews over the years, but an actual on-screen revival has remained little more than speculation among devoted fans.
That speculation just got a fresh boost from one of the show’s original stars. Ben McKenzie, who played troubled teen Ryan Atwood across all four seasons, addressed the possibility of a revival during a recent radio appearance, saying he’d genuinely be open to signing on if the opportunity arose.
Speaking on Sydney radio station KIIS 1065, McKenzie was asked whether he’d consider returning, this time perhaps as one of the show’s father figures rather than Ryan himself, referencing Peter Gallagher’s Sandy Cohen role. McKenzie responded, “I’d be up for it, sure,” according to TheWrap, adding that he wasn’t aware of any serious talks ever taking place around a revival but that he’d be interested under the right circumstances.
McKenzie went on to describe his time on ‘The O.C.’ fondly, noting how young the entire cast was during the show’s original run and how much he personally learned from the experience. That reflective tone has echoed sentiments he’s shared in past interviews about the show, which remains one of the defining credits of his career alongside ‘Southland,’ ‘Gotham’ and the Academy Award-nominated film ‘Junebug.’
The actor also shared a lighter anecdote during the same conversation, revealing he recently showed his 10-year-old daughter the show’s pilot episode, a decision he admitted he came to regret almost immediately. He explained that he’d forgotten just how much adult content was packed into that first episode, including binge drinking, cigarette smoking, cocaine use and a threesome, all of which apparently only made his daughter more eager to keep watching.
Despite his openness to a potential revival, McKenzie’s schedule currently leaves little room for such a project. He’s been busy promoting his directorial debut, the cryptocurrency documentary “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” while also making guest appearances on his wife Morena Baccarin’s police procedural “Sheriff Country” and raising three children of his own.
McKenzie’s comments arrive amid a broader wave of renewed interest in ‘The O.C.’s legacy. Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke have been revisiting the show through their rewatch podcast, “Welcome to the OC, Bitches!”, while castmate Adam Brody has continued discussing the show’s cultural impact in interviews tied to his more recent projects.
Whether any of that nostalgia translates into an actual revival remains entirely unconfirmed, with McKenzie’s comments representing speculation from the actor himself rather than any official announcement from Fox or the show’s original creative team. Still, his willingness to entertain the idea, even in passing, is likely to reignite fan hopes that a full-cast reunion could eventually happen.
Given how much cultural staying power ‘The O.C.’ has maintained since it ended, it wouldn’t be surprising if network or streaming interest eventually followed if enough momentum builds around the idea. For now, fans will have to settle for nostalgic podcast rewatches and hopeful interview soundbites like McKenzie’s.
