The documentary was directed by Leon Gast and took over two decades to finance and complete. It features extensive footage of the events leading up to the fight as well as interviews with figures who were there including journalists Norman Mailer and George Plimpton and filmmaker Spike Lee. The film not only documents a historic sporting event but also explores the cultural and political significance of the fight which took place in a newly independent African nation and celebrated Black American culture on a global stage.
‘Secrets & Lies’ (1996)

‘Secrets & Lies’ is a British drama that explores the complexities of family relationships and identity. The story centers on Hortense Cumberbatch a successful Black optometrist in London who was adopted as a child. After her adoptive mother passes away she decides to search for her birth mother. She is shocked to discover that her birth mother is a lonely white working-class woman named Cynthia Purley who has a dysfunctional family of her own. Their unexpected reunion forces both women and Cynthia’s entire family to confront long-buried secrets and painful truths.
The film was written and directed by Mike Leigh. Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays the thoughtful and composed Hortense. Brenda Blethyn gives an emotionally powerful and highly acclaimed performance as the chaotic and vulnerable Cynthia. Timothy Spall plays Maurice Cynthia’s kind-hearted brother a successful photographer who is also dealing with his own family issues. The film is known for its realistic dialogue and its deeply moving and authentic portrayal of ordinary people grappling with extraordinary circumstances.
‘Kolya’ (1996)

‘Kolya’ is a heartwarming Czech comedy-drama set in Prague in the late 1980s during the final years of Soviet communism. The story follows Louka a middle-aged concert cellist who has lost his position with the Czech Philharmonic. To make ends meet he agrees to a sham marriage with a young Russian woman so she can obtain Czech citizenship. She promptly emigrates to West Germany leaving behind her five-year-old son Kolya. Louka is suddenly left to care for the boy who speaks no Czech and their initial relationship is full of friction and misunderstanding.
The film was directed by Jan Svěrák and written by his father Zdeněk Svěrák who also stars in the lead role of Louka. Andrey Khalimon plays the young Russian boy Kolya. The film beautifully captures the development of their bond as they slowly overcome their language and cultural barriers to form a deep and loving connection. ‘Kolya’ is a touching story about unexpected fatherhood and the power of human connection set against the backdrop of a significant political transformation in Czechoslovakia.
