Billy Bob Thornton has always been honest about his first love: music. Long before Hollywood fame, he dreamed of making it as a musician, and he has said that if his band had found success earlier, he might have skipped acting altogether.

Even now, despite being an Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker, Thornton keeps music at the center of his life, balancing filming, family, and touring with his band, The Boxmasters.

Unlike many actors who treat music as a side hobby, Thornton’s passion runs deep. He has a genuine love for the albums and artists that shaped his creative life. When asked to name the single greatest album ever, he immediately points to the Allman Brothers Band’s 1971 live set Live at Fillmore East.

“It made me want to play music,” he said, recalling the first time he heard it one summer. For him, that album changed everything. Thornton’s musical tastes are surprisingly broad. Alongside southern rock, he admires The Beatles’ 1965 album Rubber Soul and early 1970s work by the British band Traffic.

“I love John Barleycorn by Traffic, as well as Traffic’s live album, On the Road. Obviously, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. The soundtrack to King Creole. God, there are just so many great records that I’ve loved over the years,” he shared.

He also regards The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds as a nearly unbeatable pop masterpiece and recommends Joe Walsh’s The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get for road trips. “Put that on in the fu*****g car someday when you’re going to Santa Barbara… it’ll put you in a fu****g trance. It’s so good,” he joked.

Thornton has also been enjoying a big career moment on TV. He stars in the Paramount+ drama Landman, created by Taylor Sheridan, where he plays Tommy Norris, a crisis manager navigating the tricky world of West Texas oil.

The show’s second season, which ran from November 2025 to January, broke viewership records and was renewed for a third season in December. Filming for new episodes is underway, promising more intense storylines and power struggles within M-Tex Oil.

Despite his busy filming schedule, Thornton continues performing with The Boxmasters. The band is touring in support of their latest album, Pepper Tree Hill, which features collaborations with legends like Herb Alpert. One of their next stops is the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio, California, on April 25.

Whether on stage with his band, on set in Texas, or working with family, Thornton continues to follow the art that first inspired him as a teen in Arkansas. For him, music and acting are equally important, and he’s built a career that honors both passions.
