Marvel Studios’ Black Panther 3 is still early in development, but new reported details suggest the next Wakanda adventure could take the franchise in a much bigger direction. The film is expected to focus on the next generation of heroes, while exploring the meaning of carrying the Black Panther name.

According to insider Alex Perez, Black Panther 3 is currently one of Marvel’s top priorities. Perez also shared that the character previously referred to as T’Challa II will simply be called T’Challa moving forward, as the story focuses on his journey and his future as the new Black Panther.

The reported direction of the movie is said to center around a coming-of-age story. Instead of only focusing on battles and global threats, the film will reportedly explore what it means for a young T’Challa to inherit such an important title and follow in the footsteps of his father.

Legacy is expected to be one of the biggest themes of the sequel. After the death of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Black Panther role became a symbol of family, tradition, and responsibility. The third film could continue exploring how Wakanda decides who should carry that legacy into the future.

One reported storyline involves Nakia having doubts about T’Challa becoming the next Black Panther. According to Perez, there have been discussions about Nakia not wanting her son to inherit the throne or take on the dangerous responsibilities that come with the role.

The conflict could create a very personal story, with T’Challa having to prove that he is ready while also dealing with pressure from the people closest to him.

The film is also expected to expand the supernatural side of Wakanda. Perez reported that director Ryan Coogler wants to explore deeper connections to the ancestral plane, the spiritual world that has been an important part of Black Panther mythology.

The movie may also introduce more mutants into the story. While the franchise already introduced Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta, in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the new reports suggest that Marvel could bring in more mutant-related elements as the MCU continues building toward a larger mutant storyline.

Development on Black Panther 3 has been moving forward for several years. After the release of Wakanda Forever in 2022, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Ryan Coogler reportedly began discussing ideas for another movie. In 2024, reports revealed that Coogler had spoken with Denzel Washington about joining the cast, and Marvel later confirmed Washington would appear in the film.

Producer Nate Moore, who previously worked on the Black Panther movies, was also expected to return before leaving Marvel Studios to focus on other projects.

Coogler confirmed in 2025 that Black Panther 3 would be his next film, officially moving the project into development. The movie is currently expected to arrive in 2028.

While many details remain unknown, the reported plans suggest Marvel is aiming for a different type of Black Panther story. Instead of simply repeating what came before, the studio appears ready to explore a new era for Wakanda, focusing on identity, family, and the challenge of becoming a symbol bigger than yourself.
